At midnight on June 30, 1997, Hong Kong has been the site of an historic event: British sovereignty over the Crown Colony of Hong Kong has been transferred to the People's Republic of China. The author describes the financial importance of Hong Kong, as an international trading center and the economic and political challenges following the Joint Declaration of Britain and China in 1984. Farewell Hong Kong, welcome Xiangtang, the new Chinese name of the Special Administrative Region, governed under a high degree of autonomy by the policy of "one country, two systems". A large place is allowed to the Hong Kong insurance industry, its P&C and Life insurance operations and its Asian important market.

AbstractThe recent evolution of cities, and the megalopolis in particular, Is taking two opposite directions : on the one hand, we are witnessing the emergence of spectacle cities that are attractive on account of all they have to offer in the way of symbols of a capitalist and prosperous world order ; on the other, we note cities that are the antithesis of this development, and where, on the contrary the signs of decay, underdevelopment and threat seem to predominate. Such a split seems to separate the development of the megalopolis of Latin America as compared with those of the rest of North America and Europe. In Mexico, which has experienced exploding urban and demographic development over the last fifty or so years, the traces of both these trends can be found - first, the journalistic-style images of a photographer like Enrique Metinides present signs of the threatening city, whereas the pictures shown in the huge advertising posters present signs of the inviting city. Both these trends are present as forces that structure the way people may view the future development of the megalopolis, especially in Latin America, insofar as these mega cities present the alternative between the spectacle-city and the paranoid city.

In S/Z (1970), an ambitious semiotic study of Honoré de Balzac’s “Sarrasine,” Roland Barthes analyzes the ideological oppositions behind this graphic differentiation based on observing an unexpected deviation from the norm in the male protagonist’s name. This article reveals that Barthes’s analysis is applicable to Cervantes’s and Zayas’s novellas, abounding as they are in female Moorish characters whose names begin with the letter Z. The presence of this Z is best understood, not in phonological terms, but from the perspective of the cultural fabric of seventeenth-century Spain, where the Z becomes the stamp that unequivocally denounces the otherness and social castration of the female characters.

The long story of japanese animation begins in the early 1910's, but the japanese animation industry rises only after the Second World War, during the reconstruction of the country. The renaissance of japanese cinema in the 50s, the arrival of the television in the 60s and the progressive rise of a local high-tech industry will incent manga publishers to invest in animated adaptation - first on TV, then with localy produced animated feature films. First a very rare and prestigious event, the adaptation of a manga into an animated movie is now a very common thing, fully integrated into Japanese entertainment companies' transmedia strategies. Most of the time, those adaptations are minor, or even cheap re-editions of TV series without particular upgrades. But some of them were a great opportunity for young directors (Mamoru Oshii, Mamoru Osoda...) to make their first movies. Recently, new ways of adapting mangas into movies have appeared, with an alternance of TV series and animated movies, blurring the frontier between television and cinema.

War is a form of competition and the drug wars are no exception to this definition. Drug wars are actually classic illustrations of competitors abusing the legal process to define their own drug trading as lawful while characterizing their competitor's behaviour as “crime”. Successive American federal administrations extended the drug wars through a combination of military assistance, financial pressure and secret agreements. These aggressions are the real abuses aimed at third world cultures. Since Americans purchase 60% of all illicit drugs and finance more than 90% of the police action against the trade, drug legalization drug crusade. On the other hand, even if drug legalization makes sense the U.S. federal government will not necessarily act sensibly. An alternative possibility is reform outside the U.S. capable of generating a competitive crises internationaly.
