This article offers an overview of the francophone short story in British Columbia through consideration of such well known authors as Jean-Claude Castex, Christian Récizac, Monique Genuist, Marguerite-A. Primeau and Inge Israel. Emerging from the province's French-speaking minority and migrant community, the francophone short story of British Columbia is marked at the thematic level by the synergies and creative tensions engendered by the repeated passage of the diasporic story between the native land and the new, between nostalgia and national memory, between urban space and the abundant natural beauty so integral to the dominant social myths of the West Coast.

This paper focuses on the internet phenomenon known as swatting, which has existed in the United States for over fifteen years but only recently appeared in Europe. Often described by its perpetrators – online gamers – as a “hoax” or a “phone prank”, swatting can have dramatic consequences, as demonstrated by a case in Wichita, Kansas, in December 2017, in which a man was killed during the event. The aim of this paper is to define what is swatting, what are its implications for security, what are the risks and issues it poses, and what types of behavior it includes.

In this article, we shed critical light on the theory of securitization as developed by the « Copenhagen School » in security studies by interrogating its tendency to avoid questions pertaining to reciprocal violence, physical coercion and war. More specifically, we try to assess under what conditions a fruitful debate could be engaged between the « Copenhagen School » and an international political sociology of violence and war. One of the main problems, we argue, is that research inspired by the Copenhagen theory of securitization has avoided empirical subjects displaying interactions between securitizing moves and strategies of coercion, both involving performative utterances, in the social construction of security problems. These interactions are however crucial from the point of view of the sociology of conflicts as well as for the historical sociology of the state.

The Indian Ocean – a gateway to energy and a vital international sea route – has always been important for China. And with the Maritime Silk Road, it is becoming the incubator of a new Chinese conception of maritime power. This predominantly geoeconomic vision, with its underlying notion of “maritime connectivity,” doesn't translate into partnerships and cooperation agreements with coastal states, because it is incompatible with an anarchic maritime system dominated by traditional visions of security and interstate rivalries. In this competitive context, the Chinese approach is instead confined to the yielding of economic power over its partners and the construction of dual-use infrastructure (civil and military) indicative of China's ambivalent posture.
