According to contemporary observers, in the years from 1576 to 1579 Henry III brought together groups of orators-men and women, poets and courtiers-to discuss questions of moral philosophy. This happened both in Paris, and in provincial towns such as Blois and Ollainville. Several of the speeches given by these diverse orators remain extant. Among the spectators was Marguerite de Valois, who ordered the transcription of thirteen speeches that were pronounced during the January-February period of 1576. This album, preserved in a beautifully-bound manuscript, provides an interesting testimony to the intellectual curiosity of Marguerite and to the abiding interest of the king and his court in the domain of eloquence. The present article describes the context in which Marguerite de Valois participated in the first sessions of the Palace Academy, and presents the manuscript volume containing several, palpable traces of her reading of the texts. It also evaluates the contribution of some poets from Marguerite's entourage, such as Ronsard, Desportes, Baïf and Jamyn, and examines aspects of their philosophical debates as well as their oratorical skills.

This paper provides an analysis of the characteristics of complexity in medical language. Complexity allows a greater density of informational content, and a more efficient transmission of information among experts. However, if the ratio between informational content and effort required to understand it exceeds a determined threshold, complexity may impede communication rather than aid it. This so called “hypercomplexity” creates a barrier in communication, not only between healthcare professionals and unqualified persons, but also among specialists. For the classification of a text the authors propose a complexity scale, based on the linguistic opaqueness and the typology of the text. The impact of the complexity level on the result of a communication will be shown on examples taken from a corpus of educational material (informed consent forms and pharmaceutical package inserts).

This article explores the significance of the growing recognition of the social economy by public authorities in Europe. It demonstrates how this trend is unfolding in a context marked on a national level by very disparate approaches, but a general trend towards commodification is emerging, which shapes the values and operating principles prevalent in the sector. Despite considerable hesitation, initiatives undertaken by the European Union in favor of social entrepreneurship are reinforcing this trend by promoting competition in the market and its financial profitability.
