Radio-Collège was the first educational radio show on CBC's French network. It aired several series about science, the humanities, religion and philosophy, fine arts, music, and theatre for fifteen years up to the advent of television. The series' leitmotiv, post-war spiritual and existential anxiety, set the stage for the important questioning that took place in the 1960s. The end of Radio-Collège in 1956 coincides with the launch of public cultural radio.

AbstractIn a context of openness and regional integration, Luang Namtha province is the epitome of the challenges Laos faces today. For the past ten years or so, the region has been experiencing major changes in connection with the opening of the North-South corridor between China and Thailand. The Master Plan promoted by the ADB constitutes the cornerstone of the economic Quadrangle, the cross border growth area. The Lao government's goal is, on the one hand, to turn the country's mountainous outskirts into large free-trade areas and, on the other, to strengthen the emergence of the modern nation-state by transferring the mountain populations of Laos to the plains so as to better control the land and its resources. Essentially, the economic corridor provides a new major access route for the Lao and foreign investors looking to farm new lands, mine ore and produce hydroelectricity. The territory comprising Luang Namtha province, together with its local populations, have been forced to adapt to radical changes resulting from the central government's new strategy, and are undergoing in-depth transformations that result in conflicts around social and environmental issues.

Characterization is essential to legal reasoning. Rules of law can only be applied once particular facts have been characterized in a certain way. Contract law cannot escape this reality since all agreements are subject to a variety of legal provisions. The law recognizes many contractual forms, which are deemed « nominate contracts », as opposed to « innominate contracts », which are the result of practical innovation. The nature of a contract is determined by a particular method which must exclude mere intuition. Characterization will basically be achieved by the analysis of the obligations contained in the contract. This analysis will focus on the identification of a fundamental obligation or a caracteristic prestation. The author argues that the notions of object and cause of the contract do not play a central role, as they often fail to reveal the true nature of a contract.Characterization of a contract is in itself an objective process taking place after the exchange of consent. Parties will have limited influence on the characterization of their agreement, since this is a question of law and is left to the determination of the court. The consequences of a mistaken characterization by the parties will differ according to the circumstances.

In this article, we argue that when interaction between law and social sciences is viewed as a backdrop, three epistemological propositions stand out as opening new horizons for empirical research in law, namely : “decentering the subject”, ‘'interviewing'' systems by means of qualitative interviews oriented toward the observation of communication, and the “desubstantialization of legal categories''. These epistemological premises are described as the requisite conditions for grounding an external perspective on the law. They are also considered to be favourable for the development of multi-disciplinary research in law as both law and social sciences can (under certain conditions) benefit from these three analytical strategies. Social sciences must ‘'take the law seriously'', research in law having to be carried out ‘'with the law''. As for law, it may improve its observations and internal normative models by more fully integrating the knowledge generated by social sciences into its decisional premises. The author advances the hypothesis that this integration — already a reality on the judicial arena, yet still lightly problematized — will tend to continuously evolve ever more in the legal universe yet to come. Contemporary social issues (religious rights, minority rights, women's rights, native peoples' rights, the right to assisted suicide, same-sex marriage rights, reproductive rights, the rights of undocumented persons, etc.) are increasingly regulated by legal figures characterized by their ‘'open normative composition'' (fundamental values, human rights, etc.). Social sciences will increasingly tend to be seen as valuable cognitive resources for determining and specifying legality, thereby essential for those who conceive and shape the law. Indeed, since these issues demand creativity, juristic imagination and cognitive and normative openness from juridical actors when confronted with varying regulatory options, social sciences will in this context provide vital elements for determining potential, yet still not actualized, possibilities within this context.

Context: Scientific literature suggests that the participation of individuals in the recovery process as research partners represents an added scientific and social value to drug addiction research. However, few studies have systematically evaluated the impacts of such participation on the persons concerned and on their perception of it.Objective: This article describes various approaches and levels of possible participation in research. The effects of their participation were discussed by persons who were actively involved in two projects. Discussion groups were held with a view to finding out what they thought active participation in research could offer them and what they thought they could provide to a research dynamic, as peer research assistants. Results: Participating actively in a research project encourages emancipation from poverty, while recognizing skills and offering access to information. It also provides an opportunity for the persons involved to assume responsibilities, and some research topics seem more likely that others to foster greater levels of participation. The two main themes which emerged in regard to the effect of the participation of the peer research assistants were those of non-verbal language and stronger relationship bonds. That is, their presence improved retention and increased the interest of the other participants in the study, since this dynamic made the participants more comfortable in expressing themselves, a fact that was then also transferred to their natural living environment. Conclusion: The various possible levels and degrees of participation in research may be combined and vary over time or according to the themes of the research project. More research is needed to better understand the issues involved in participating in research and its specific effects in drug addiction, as well as the influence of peer research assistants over civic recovery.

Substance use and unsafe sex are dangerous behaviors that greatly impact street youths' health and security. In addition to mental health issues, impulsive personality traits can be a significant risk factor to several of these problem behaviors. The primary objective of this study was to draw a portrait of street youth, and then verify the predictive value of impulsive personality traits on risky behaviors over and above mental health issues. Thirty-one street youth answered the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, which measures five dimensions of impulsivity, and other instruments which measure mental health problems (BSI), alcohol and drug use (ASAN-Alcohol/Drugs) and risky sexual behaviors (RBS).Street youth mention various significant mental health issues, multiple alcohol and drug-related problems, as well as numerous risky sexual behaviors. As for the predictive value of impulsive personality traits, regression analyses show positive Urgency as the best unique predictor of alcohol dependence and negative consequences related to it, while Sensation seeking is not significantly related to any risky behavior. Furthermore, lack of Perseverance is the unique predictor of negative consequences related to drug use, while lack of Premeditation is the only dimension significantly related to the quantity of alcohol consumed. These results show the importance of clinically evaluating and intervening on impulsive personality traits to better prevent risky behavior among street youth.

Downtown districts of Tokyo are well known for the eccentric fashion style of some individuals, especially around Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya or Roppongi. Some of them are part of large subcultural communities and have an active role in the cultural life of Tokyo, expressing themselves through fashion events, shows, dance parties or art exhibits. The lolita, gothics, angora (“underground”), fetishists and others have formed a culturally and aesthetically marginal community. This study explores identity formation of subculture community members and the discourse of “perversion” and “abnormality.” The latter has become a key word in their “marginal” identity, grounding their activities and serving as esthetical resistance to the dominant culture.

This article examines how Latin-American intellectuals in Mexico and Costa Rica have reformulated the discourse on and definition of violence against women over the past 20 years. Its goal is to identify the defining strategies used in the concepts femicidio and feminicidio to denounce, conceptualize, and politicize violence experienced by women, especially in a private context. By combining inputs from sociology and linguistics, this article highlights the intersecting dynamics between the contexts of mobilization, discursive formulation of new concepts, and how new legal categories are brought to the public agenda.
