Purpose: To assess barriers encountered by Deaf persons from Nairobi’s informal settlements, such as language, in obtaining information and treatment services related to HIV and AIDS.Method: Upon completion of a literature review, consultation with Deaf Empowerment Kenya, two focus group discussions with Deaf community members, a quantitative questionnaire was designed and administered to 32 Deaf participants from Dandora, Haruma and Kayole. Results: Although the results from the questionnaires represent a small sample of Deaf adults in Kenya, it offers important insight into the perspectives of Deaf persons in the context of HIV and AIDS. Future programming should continue to be offered in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), the Deaf community’s primary language - whether through seminars with interpreters and Deaf lecturers, Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) HIV testing and counseling in KSL, or a new innovation: educational videos with Deaf actors. Written materials should be complementary and not the means to an end, and supplemented with clear illustrations. Conclusions: It is recommended that Deaf persons are empowered and involved in the development of learning materials to suit their unique needs, and create a sense of ownership of future education, treatment, care and support programs.

Labor standards are a contentious issue in International Trade Law and particularly reflect the dichotomy between developed and underdeveloped states. The first tend to protect labor rights extensively and the latter rarely do so. Since its inception, the International Labor Organization has significantly bettered the protection of labor rights, but this is not the best forum to uniquely pursue given its lack of enforcement mechanisms. The World Trade Organization until now has also failed to protect international labor rights and a comprehensive agreement to this effect is improbable, at least in the short to mid-term. A new form of soft-regulation has however developed: the Corporate Code of Conduct. Presently, we are at the genesis of an era where multi-national corporations are beginning to possess obligations at International Law. The advantage of Corporate Codes of Conduct is that they are flexible, transnational and as international and adaptable as a corporation can be. This paper argues that the combined application of International Labor Organization conventions, World Trade Organization rules and Corporate Codes of Conduct can significantly improve the protection of labor rights, despite a general lack of rule enforcement mechanisms.

Noting a constant increase in the use of antidepressants in Canada, the writer calls into question representations relating to the pertinence of certain underlying principles or values followed in Canadian Criminal law, particularly assumptions surrounding certain notions such as intent, will and awareness in assessing imputation. The writer underscores the timeworn applications of these notions in Criminal Law in comparison to recent developments in psychology and in philosophy of mind. To what does one allude in the context of modernism when one utilizes expressions such as "guilty intent" or "blameworthy state of mind"? To what does the criminal law refer when it uses words such as "consciousness" or "will". This text criticizes the commonly held understanding of the notion of free will, which, like imputation, relates to concepts of theological origin which are no longer adapted to present day situations. It also discusses how to assess or evaluate actions performed under the influence of psychotropic drugs.
