The aim of the research was to identify firstly the personal, familial, social and cultural factors which lead underage girls in to prostitution in Bobo-Dioulasso, and secondly, the reasons which led to their situation. A semi-structured interview was administered individually to 15 girls from 14 to 18 years old. Qualitative analysis of the transcript reveals that several risk factors have exposed the girls to prostitution, including: violence and abuse suffered in the family, early sexual abuse, lack of education or vocational training and economic insecurity of parents.

Some of the individuals who have engaged in prostitution while receiving social assistance, and then received government claims of overpayment of benefits due to this undeclared “income” have mobilized the law by bringing the matter before Quebec's administrative courts. This paper argues that these government claims can be seen to encourage prostitution, in contradiction of the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act and that, as such, many could be characterized as cruel and unusual treatment or punishment under Section 12 of the Canadian Charter, and should therefore be quashed.

Abstract International studies on alcohol consumption call for a gender specific frame of analysis. They furthermore highlight the variation in consumption patterns according to different roles attributed to women. When considering prostitution as another social role, the present article brings us to think of the positive symbolic value of alcohol consumption in the definition of womanhood. Data collected during field work in Bolivia allows us to suggest the hypothesis that this consumption redefines the relationship of women prostitutes with their clients and their relation to sexual activity. It subsequently allows these women to distance themselves from the stigmatizing attributes of their work and to join the ranks of honourable women. This discussion brings us to think of alcohol consumption independently from drug use and to go further than its sociosanitary aspects, to consequently focus on the subjective meaning that such an individual, social and cultural activity may have.
