Ce projet de maîtrise se veut être une recherche exploratoire concernant l'expérience de femmes exerçant le travail du sexe en agence d'escortes dans la ville de Québec. Plus particulièrement, l'objectif de la présente étude vise à analyser le processus par lequel les travailleuses du sexe laissent de côté leur vie «normale» pour s'insérer dans l'espace marginal de la prostitution et les différentes stratégies de négociation qui s'opèrent dans l'acceptation du nouveau statut de prostituée. Pour réaliser cette recherche, nous avons retenu l'approche qualitative et utilisé les méthodes d'observation participante, les entrevues informelles et formelles à partir d'un questionnaire semi-ouvert. AbstractThis paper puts sex tourism, which expanded in Thailand from the 1960s' onwards, back into the global context of prostitution as it is locally conceived and practicized. Various historic and cultural factors are considered to explain the scale of the phenomenon. The images of the prostitutes and of their Western customers depicted by the local urban elites and the poor peasantry are compared, and their differences pointed out. Based upon mobility and the contact with foreigners from inside or outside, prostitution stands in a deep state of ambiguity which relates to the identity stakes it crystallizes and to the latent tensions between social classes and ethnic components of the nation it expresses.

This article is a reflection on my work as a sex worker and activist amid the global concern over human trafficking. I highlight the challenges that sex workers can experience as we attempt to position ourselves within discursive frameworks that define us by our injuries. I contend that the focus on injuries risks obscuring the varied experiences of performing sexual labour, the contributions to knowledge made by sex working people, and the solidarity within sex working communities.

Women's organizations played an active part in the Progressive movement for the reform of North American cities in the early twentieth century. Women reformers could and did cooperate with men but had their own distinct perception of the city and their own definition of urban reform. Lacking capital and political power, however, women were forced to depend on the support of male reformers and had to address themselves to the men's concerns. This study examines the relationship between the Young Women's Christian Association and Canadian businessmen as it was manifested in a number of successful fund-raising campaigns for YWCA buildings in Canadian cities between 1890 and 1930. YWCA women "sold" their building to the business community as a sound investment and an asset that would reflect well on the reputations of enterprising business leaders and a modern progressive community.
