Demographic aging raises fundamental issues in the response of social actors to the health needs of seniors. The purpose of this contribution is twofold. It consists, on the one hand, of identifying the main health issues facing Francophone seniors in minority communities and, on the other hand, of examining the situation of social inequalities and the resulting living conditions as a determinant of health, as well as to the quality of and access to services from a territorial development perspective. The results of our analysis show that the minority/majority ratio reflects a social inequality which, coupled with other social determinants, contributes de facto to the formation of health disparities, hence the need to implement a policy for seniors living in Francophone minority communities designed to reduce such disparities.

The pandemic has greatly affected the teaching profession in Quebec. The objective of this research project is to describe teachers’ experience during this pandemic linked to COVID-19. Twenty-five teachers participated to semi-structured individual interviews. This article specifically presents the case of one of the teachers in order to describe the complex analysis process by categorization, then, discuss the results based on the conceptual framework of competent action. The results present a sawtooth evolution of the teacher’s feelings, and the continuous adaptation modalities used in times of crisis. Also, results present professional learning in critical situations and their subsequent reinvestment.

When it comes to innovation, businesses in rural minority communities face more barriers than their counterparts in other areas. An innovation ecosystem (IE) may help to overcome some of these difficulties. This article explores the functioning of an IE in a Francophone minority rural environment, the Clare region of Nova Scotia, by focusing on two questions: How do companies in this region interact with support organizations? Are these interactions integrated into an IE? The results show that the main actors of an IE are in place but that their presence alone is not sufficient to ensure adequate support. A common platform for meeting and exchange, and an IE leader are still missing. Moreover, the existence of a secrecy culture negatively affects the trust required for fruitful relations and limits exchanges between actors.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sudden shift to distance learning. For many nursing students, distance learning is a new experience and an essential requirement if they hope to complete their programs. Two challenges that nursing students could face during e-learning are the lack of social presence and low satisfaction. This study aimed to assess students’ sense of community and satisfaction during e-learning and determine their impacts on academic achievement. This cross-sectional descriptive study used convenience sampling to collect data via a student satisfaction survey and a classroom community scale. There was a positive and significant correlation between the sense of community, total satisfaction with e-learning (p < .001), and academic achievement (p < .001). Academic achievement was positively and strongly correlated with satisfaction with teaching (p < .001), assessment (p < .001), generic skills and learning experiences (p < .001), and total satisfaction with e-learning (p < .001). Students who worked collaboratively with their classmates and were more engaged in their learning were more satisfied with e-learning and had higher academic achievement (p < .01). Female participants reported a strong sense of community and satisfaction with e-learning and greater academic achievement than males. Junior students perceived higher satisfaction scores and greater academic achievement (p < .01) than senior students. The findings of this study suggest that failing to meet student expectations can lead to low levels of student involvement. Students’ engagement and satisfaction are good indicators of the quality and effectiveness of online programs.

Faced with the development of popular science comics, this article proposes to meet the authors of this new niche, their perceptions of these developments, and to distinguish different profiles of francophone authors. Based on an analysis of specific collections and titles and semi-directive interviews with several authors (Pochep, Héloïse Chochois, Martin PM, Emanuelle Dufour and Pierre Nocerino), the article looks in detail at three profiles: one-time popularizers, author-mediators and author-researchers. Once these profiles are described, a last part gathers feedbacks on the collaboration with scientists, showing similar ways of working and limits, with notably a paradoxical unthought on the scientific evaluation of the drawing and the graphic narration, nowadays almost absent in the feedbacks of the researchers' works adapted in comics.

Based on anthropological research conducted in Rome, Warsaw and Gdańsk, from 2002 to 2018, the article analyses the family as a space of circulation of children through experiences of informal adoption, fosterage or childcare. The description of three cases, followed over a long period of time, allows us to identify three modalities of circulation that range from a change of permanent home (without any change in filiation), to reversible forms of residential fostering, to care practices and residential proximity. These configurations vary over time and evolve with the normative ideals around the parental relationship and the status of the child. The circulation of a child seems to mark the following generations and induce other forms of transfer, a stronger propensity to mobility between residences and an increased presence of collaterals in domestic spaces. The article also shows the gendered nature of these relationships. Finally, these exchanges reveal a complex interplay between elective affinities and power games associated with economic constraints or status asymmetries.

For the adopted child, the negotiation of their identity and belonging to the adoptive family depends on the story told about the circumstances of their removal from the birth family and arrival in the adoptive family. Inspired by the child-centered approach, this article presents the perspective of Quebec school-aged children, adopted from care, on their representations of adoption and family, in relation to those of the other members of their adoptive family. Initially, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven parents from five families. Five years later, their children, then of school age, were interviewed. The comparison of the accounts revealed certain constants in the normalization of the child's withdrawal from their birth family and the distancing of the birth parents with whom the child has no relationship. Also, a caring discourse values the different caregivers in the child's pre-adoptive history. The results highlight the influence of the adoptive parents' discourse and level of exploration regarding origins on the child's understanding.

Since the beginning of the 2000s, the notarial profession is going through a process of modernization, which is today reflected in the digitalization of many activities and services. This article shows how the digitalization of activities has gradually become an opportunity for notaries to assert their added value towards citizens, while strengthening their position in the Belgian judicial system. Based on qualitative research within Belgian notary's offices, we analyze the implementation of two digital applications (eRegistration and Biddit). Such applications modify two important activities of the profession: the registration of authentic acts and the public sales of real estate. Based on a socio-ergonomic analysis of the activities and discourses of multiple notaries involved in digitalization, we show how such digital applications have contributed to the evolution of the professional identity of notaries. At the institutional level, we discuss the central role played by the notaries' professional federation (Fednot) in the digitalization of the profession. Our results show that the digitalization of the profession reinforces an already existing tension between two roles related to the notarial activity in Belgium: the role of state officer and that of entrepreneur.

SummaryThe world of work is undergoing major transformations (teleworking, new technologies, Industry 4.0, social reform in some countries) in which labour relations are likely to play a central role. In this context, our case study presents an alternative approach to local social dialogue: “Social Design.” The specific aim was to mobilize stakeholders to deal with the introduction of digital technology at a large industrial company in France. Within the theoretical and methodological framework of activity-centred ergonomics, we analyzed the process of co-design and the process of design “in use.” We conducted interviews, work activity observations and simulations of future working conditions. We identified “fruitful possibilities” (e.g., more extensive participation by stakeholders and collective discussions about the transformation of work) and “real-life resistance” (e.g., difficulties in finding common agreement). We report on the quality of local social dialogue and provide an epistemology of the action of social dialogue on the theme of the transformation of work. In sum, we describe an original initiative to transform local social dialogue in the context of a changing workplace.AbstractWe present the results of a research-action initiative to strengthen participation by social dialogue stakeholders (union representatives, managers and workers) in companies that are being digitally transformed. For this, we used activity-centred ergonomics. After presenting a co-design process, i.e., “Social Design,” we describe how the initiative was carried out in a large industrial company and how it was re-designed “in use.” We thus helped certain union representatives participate in dialogue on the topical issue of digital transformation, thereby helping define a new organizational structure in the workplace and further developing the “Social Design” approach.
