This study analyzes the image of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Bertrand Bonello's film La Bête (2023), using an approach that combines cinematographic analysis and genetic criticism. It focuses on the genesis and exogenesis of the film, based on the pre-production document “Découpage LA BÊTE,” which was kindly shared by the director. A loose adaptation of Henry James' short novel The Beast in the Jungle (1903), La Bête explores one of its major themes: the emotional dimension that distinguishes humans from machines. Invisible yet omnipresent, AI questions the relationship between the creator and his work, as well as the role of “artificial persons” in contemporary society. Through complex, non-linear narration, unsettling visual effects, and a mix of cinematic genres, Bonello presents a science fiction work that depicts a near future where AI dominates the world. The figure of AI, which elicits both fascination and repulsion, raises questions about the impact of new technologies on everyday life and challenges the boundaries of human identity.

Being interested in socioecological issues, whether global or local, involves considering the different aspects of a territory; which implies adopting an interdisciplinary approach. It is with this interdisciplinary perspective that the story of the socio-ecological transition in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (Quebec) is presented using a biographical approach. Accounts of actors, with the contribution of a consistent press review, allow us to observe this narrative. The latter is expressed by themes related to hope and anxiety, the need to adapt, the consideration of elements for quality of life such as the landscape, social ties, as well as the desire to continue to realize projects in a social and solidarity economy. Thus, actors who were apparently isolated initially, but who have distinguished themselves through social ecology practices where interactions are essential, can contribute to the transformation of the territory.

Objective: To foster resilience through reducing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in pregnant mothers with child maltreatment (CM) histories, it is important to understand factors impacting their well-being. This study explored whether CM predicted the severity of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters during pregnancy and change in symptoms from pregnancy (Time 1; T1) to 3 months postpartum (Time 2; T2). Methods: 88 pregnant women (aged 18 to 29) completed surveys on CM exposure, adult interpersonal trauma experiences, and PTSD symptoms at T1; 58 participated at T2. Results: Stepwise regressions were conducted with the covariates age, family status, and adult interpersonal traumas. When accounting for all CM types, only neglect remained associated with overall PTSD symptoms (Ft1(4, 71) = 19.08, p < .001) and for each of the PTSD symptom clusters (ps < .01). Physical abuse remained associated with the alterations in cognition and mood cluster. No CM types were associated with changes in PTSD symptoms from T1 to T2. Implications: In future research, the implications of neglect for pregnant mothers should be explored in depth. Perinatal care should be trauma-informed, including assessing for CM histories, to foster greater resilience by reducing perinatal PTSD symptoms.

We argue that jokes are not just about the ha-ha and laughter, but they are a technology, and a medium that create an environment and they have a serious purpose. We examine the mediumof the joke making particular use of the work of three scholars who made a serious effort to understandthe phenomenon of the joke and humor, namely Sigmund Freud (1916) in his book Jokes and TheirRelation to the Unconscious, Johan Huizinga (1971) in his book Homo Ludens and Marshall McLuhan(1964) in his book Understanding Media and his other writings. For Freud jokes like dreams are themedium to reach the unconscious mind. For Huizinga play, puns and games that are closely related tojokes are a universal aspect of human culture dating back to our very origin. For McLuhan jokes areabout grievances and a way people deal with them.

Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971) is at once an infamous film, a founding film of “nunsploitation” and, today, a cult film. Loosely adapted from Aldous Huxley’s The Devils of Loudun (1952), the film recounts a demonic affair in Loudun in 1634 that caused a scandal at the time. a local priest was executed for having bewitch the prioress of the Ursuline convent. Ken Russell turned the event into a political trial to denounce the abuse of power. This study draws on the work of historian Michel de Certeau, author of a monograph on the Loudun affair, to examine the film’s religious motifs: bouts of demonic possession versus exorcisms, politico-religious manipulations and the priest, Grandier’s martyrdom. Far from being an anti-religious film, Russell exploits the most spectacular resources of his art to promote redemption through love, a sign of individual freedom when confronted with the prerogatives of the State.
