The study uses data from the Nouna Population Observatory in Burkina Faso to examine mortality, chronic morbidity and self-reported health of residents aged 50 and above by type of residence (household living arrangements). We use the Gompertz parametric model for the analysis of mortality, and logistic regression models for self-reported health and chronic morbidity. The results show that the health of older persons varies across household living arrangements, with an advantage for those living with a spouse. Men living alone or with young dependents report more chronic diseases than women living alone or with young dependents. On the other hand, married men report that they are healthier than married women. In addition, widowers living with non-dependent children exhibit a higher risk of death compared to widows of the same group. This study revealed the importance of residential arrangements for health in rural area in Africa. Older persons living with other non-dependent people have better health than others.

This article is concerned with the question of immigrant families who have settled in regions of Quebec that are considered homogeneous, that is, that have traditionally witnessed little immigrant presence. A study conducted in two Quebec regions, Estrie, and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, allows for examination of several areas of misunderstanding between immigrants and workers in the field of social services: the family, history, and change. Following this analyis, the article presents an approach to situated intercultural intervention that takes these dimensions into account. This approach makes it possible to identify the educational focuses that should be developed to enable all students to open up to intercultural realities.

Haitian writer Jacques Roumain's book Gouverneurs de la rosée presents a protoype of a character and identity, of which sociopolitical and ecological dimensions are prominant. The qualities of the primary character, Manuel, are reflected and rendered more transparent through the well-known socio-political and scientific activism of the author. We explore the ecological identity of the main character in the book while underscoring the literary value of the poetic and Haitian vernacular narrative presented by the author. In sum, we trace what we believe to be the central message of this important literary work: a proposal for environmental education and ecological identity within a socio-environmental Haitian context.

Creating a global discursive space in International Relations education faces three major challenges : transcending mono-disciplinarity, overcoming parochialism(s), and integrating practical knowledge. We live in a world of multiple, co-existing, mutually inter-penetrating world orders and therefore need an approach to International Relations education that can comprehend and transcend these very real differences. The challenges of achieving inter- (rather than multi-) disciplinarity are considered, different forms of parochialism are identified and problematized, and ways of integrating practical knowledge (linking theory and practice) are explored. The article concludes with some recommendations of ways to achieve a critical form of cosmopolitanism in International Relations education.

In recent years there has been an important shift in the pattern of Canadian food aid distribution towards a greater concentration on Africa. Recent projections call for increased transfers of food aid to Africa in the foreseeable future. Given the growing concern about the long-term contribution that food aid might make to increasing food sufficiency in Africa, this paper examines the concept of « developmental » food aid and its implications for Canadian food aid policy. First, the article discusses some of the problems that arise out of the provision of increased volumes of non-emergency food aid to Africa. Then, it examines the recent evolution of Canadian food aid policy with particular attention to some of the difficulties involved in implementing a strategy of providing « developmental » food aid to Africa on a long-term basis. The issues of policy dialogue, recipient selection, donor co-ordination, and food aid dependence are discussed respectively.
