The Anabaptists (Amish, Hutterites and Mennonites) are constituted by many different religious groups that maintained similar beliefs and practices, keeping, for example, sensibly the same conception of law and the same prescriptions about launching lawsuits. Some of these communities, among the most conservative ones, enforce a kind of internal law based on excommunication and shunning, while strictly forbidding their members to call on civil courts. Therefore, a clear distinction exists in Anabaptist groups between the internal law (Gemeinschaftrecht) and the external law (Gesellschaftrecht). Although, in many situations, the internal law of Anabaptist communities has been insufficient to settle disputes and recourse to external law has been necessary. In other situations, Anabaptist communities also appealed to civil courts to claim a respect of their religious liberty. In this article, some of these situations will be taken into account to show how the internal law of Anabaptist communities is related to the external law. To explore this problematic, the sociology of Ferdinand Tönnies will be firstly presented as a mean of theorizing the notions of community and society. After, the judicial culture of Anabaptist groups will be considered. Then, some judicial cases related to excommunication and shunning will be taken into account, showing how the internal law of the Anabaptist communities comes in contact with the external law. Finally, a discussion will elaborate on how the notions of community and society found their application in relation with the rights of the Anabaptists.

Many research studies have examined the impact of mentoring on career success. However, additional studies are needed to understand this relationship, because it is clear that the majority of research conducted so far has obscured the bi-dimensionality of each of these two constructs. In addition, given the specificities of women, we believe that understanding the impact of mentorship on career success would be enhanced by gender mainstreaming. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that gender plays a moderating role between the received mentorship—valued by its two instrumental and psychosocial functions—and both objective and subjective career success. Structural equations, including multi-group analyses, were conducted using data collected in the Tunisian banking sector from 237 middle and senior managers. Our results show that women get fewer promotions and seem less satisfied with their careers. In addition, women perceive they receive less support from their mentor, especially psychosocial. While this research demonstrates that for men, as for women, mentor support is associated with objective career success, this is not the case for the type of mentorship that led to this success. Thus, only the instrumental function favors the advancement of women, unlike men, whose advancement is related solely to the psychosocial function of mentoring. Finally, this study indicates the lack of a direct link between the roles of mentorship and subjective success for both men and women. However, our results reveal an indirect effect of psychosocial mentoring on men's subjective success through their objective success.

This article is an attempt to investigate the various meanings of the words « postmodernity », « postmodernism » and « postmodern ». It also assesses the significance of these words and of the concepts that they express for criminology. The paper is divided in three parts. The first part tries to dispell important misunderstandings that have sprung in relation to postmodernisrn. The most significant of these is the belief that there is such a thing as a postmodernist « method » in the social sciences. The second part identifies the origin of the term « postmodern » and discusses various themes which are perceived to be characteristic of postmodern thought. These themes are : the present legitimation crisis, the internal reflexivity of scientific theory, discourse analysis and meta-language, social and cultural fragmentation and historical pessimism. The last part draws the consequences of the preceding analyses for the development of criminology.

AbstractIn this article, a personality disorder known as “malignant narcissism” is presented. This notion is then used to explain the creation of organizational policies against perceived enemies that reflected this narcissistic rage. We illustrate our argument by the analysis of a case study in which it is shown that the leader attempted to discredit the detractors of the group, thus transposing the narcissistic rage into organizational policies that loyal members enacted on his behalf. By using psychological insights about the leader's personality, and then showing how that personality translated into socially deviant policies and actions, we hope to encourage criminologists to examine other groups by applying similar theories.

This paper explores the past, present, and future of library marketing in the United States. While its foundations were laid more than a century ago, not every library is up-to-speed in its knowledge or practice. There are “Haves” with plenty of space, staff, and money, and “Have Nots” that lack some necessities. In the midst of this uneven landscape, the author discusses the organizations and publications that support it, details the trends in four categories, and lists national campaigns and awards. Special attention is paid to the continuing challenges and the possible future scenarios.

Adopting a neo-structural perspective (Moore, 1990; Ibarra, 1995; Burt, 1995, 1998; Lin, 1995; Lazega, 2011, 2012), the present paper investigates the societal and organizational resistances (structural effect) and the relational biases (networking effect) hindering the professional advancement of women-managers in the American firms. Complementary to the (new) affirmative action policies, the cooptation mentoring and the intra-organizational affinity groups are aimed at supporting the professional integration of women-managers through the development of their organizational networks. Nevertheless, these organizational devices rely upon two distinct (assimilative vs. affiitary) logics of professional socialization.

AbstractTo date, research on the use of time, a rare resource, has been essentially focused on the use of time by individuals and on the sharing of activities amongst the members of a same household. The 1998 Canadian General Social Survey on Time Use allows us to take our understanding of family organization somewhat further, not only because it describes the schedules of the various members of a household, but because it also measures the time spent in carrying out shared activities. In the present article, we take advantage of the fact that the survey systematically noted the presence of children of the household when they were in the room with the respondent in order to describe parent-child interaction. On the one hand, we look at the variations in parental time as it relates to different characteristics of the respondents; on the other, we show, through a multivariate analysis, that parental time is much the same, whether we are dealing with a conventional or with a blended family.

This article aims at positing new theoretical and methodological approaches to better understand the commitment of SMEs to CSR. The state of the art of the publications from the best ranked journals3 from 2005 to 2015 shows that out of 83 articles published in 35 journals, organizational and strategic management theories hitherto identified provides a partial picture of the commitment of SMEs to CSR. As a matter of fact, these theories focus on the basis of the large American business, although different from the characteristics of the SME, thereby leading to distorting situations. It was therefore suggested to use the characteristics of Japanese companies which are compatible with the SME. Consequently, the theories identifies may be supplemented by sociological theories such as entrepreneurship, human resources, incentive and convention theories. Furthermore, concerning the methodology, no study presents the point of view of the researcher as a reflective practitioner who may produce different and conclusive results.

The Theatrephone, the telephone, the phonograph and the gramophone, all of them technologies based on the principle of blind listening, have each been used variously by radio, theatre, as well as cinema. Such amplified sounds are disincarnate, spectral presences. This form of listening is still found in contemporary plays when voices get severed from bodies and noises unhinged from objects. One finds it in the plays of Maurice Maeterlinck (The Blind, Intruder, Interior, The Death of the Tintagiles), Samuel Beckett (The Last Tape, Eh Joe, Not I, Rockaby, Embers), Carlo Emilio Gadda (Eros e Priapo, San Giorgio in Casa Brocchi), Ibsen (En Folkefiende, Gengangere, Bygmester Solness, Når vi døde vågner), Jean Tardieu (Une voix sans personne), Marguerite Duras (L'Amante anglaise, India Song, Savannah Bay) and several others. This article offers suggestions for developing an archaeology of mise-en-scene regarding this form of listening by examining a few devices in use at the end of the 19th century, a period rich in technological innovations.
