A needs assessment was conducted to identify the needs, challenges, and strengths of Syrian refugee children and families resettled in Canada and of services for these refugees. Ten refugee caregivers and 17 service providers were interviewed. Thematic analyses indicated significant needs and challenges experienced by refugees (e.g., persistent mental health issues, lack of in-person support), as well as challenges related to refugee services (e.g., discontinuity of mental health services). Several refugee strengths (e.g., optimism for the future and strong familial ties) and refugee service strengths (e.g., service collaboration) were identified, highlighting refugees’ adaptive capacities and points of service leverage to ensure refugees’ well-being and positive resettlement.

Quality of working life (QWL) is presently creating growing interest both because of the human and financial costs without it, and because of the benefits it can bring. Within the public sector, the numerous reforms undertaken in recent decades have resulted in work intensification and quality of life deterioration, that are factors that do not contribute to helping public organizations face their own challenges, particularly in terms of change management. In response to these issues, some organizations have supplemented their organizational changes with QWL improvement strategies that go beyond meeting legal or regulatory constraints. While research mainly focuses on the analysis of QWL for the individual, this qualitative study resorts to the stakeholder theory to better understand and explore QWL strategies within Quebec public organizations. The data provided by 33 semi-structured interviews and internal and external documents, were collected from three organizations. The results enable to identify the stakeholders involved in these QWL strategies, and to analyse their role and their reasons. They emphasize that the employer state should think about the stakeholders and the reasons for implementing a QWL strategy, and also think about the role of the Treasury Board Secretariat in establishing and supporting such strategies, and in the management of related change.

Many first-year university students experience stressors that impact their adjustment and well-being. Their help-seeking attitudes and preferred sources of support may be associated with various factors. The purpose of the present study was to (1) examine help-seeking preferences amongst first-year university students, (2) explore factors associated with students’ attitudes toward seeking mental health services, and (3) identify perceived barriers associated with accessing formal sources of support. First-year students at a Canadian university (N = 167) completed a survey assessing help-seeking attitudes and preferences, as well as challenges associated with seeking support. Participants also provided information about their perceived levels of social support, personality  characteristics, and their tendency to experience positive and negative affect. Findings suggest that social support and negative affect were significantly associated with positive attitudes toward seeking mental health services. However, students were more inclined to rely on informal sources of support, such as family members and friends, compared to formal sources of support available through on- or off-campus mental health services. For thosestudents who are inclined to access formal mental health support, barriers may impede access to care. Perceived barriers include cost and concerns about the availability of services and their overall effectiveness. These findings call for the creation of more opportunities for on-campus informal support in addition to better access to on-campus mental health services.

This article explores the student success literature published within the Canadian Journal of Higher Education (CJHE) over the last fifty years. Sixty articles were thematically organized into seven component measures of student success to present consistent themes that have persisted within the CJHE from inception in 1971 to 2020. Analysis demonstrates that there has been a disproportionate interest in some aspects of student success such as post-college performance, while other areas such as educational attainment and student engagement have lagged considerably behind in focus. Scholars have presentedongoing concerns supported by a wide range of data regarding the underemployment of graduates from Arts and Humanities, the sparse professorial landscape and the underutilization of Canadian PhD graduates in the workforce, debate on student competence and skill measurement, and the lack of large data sets on student persistence. Results suggest that a continuous effort is required to understand and support student success in a variety of formats—both within the academy and out in the workforce. Thus, this article concludes with a discussion and recommendations for future research avenues in the field of academic success and various subfields that may be of interest to higher education scholars and those who support student success.

In this article, we present an argumentative analysis of Galeazzo Flavio Capra’s Della Eccelenza e dignità della donna (1525), one of the least studied Renaissance treatises of the “Querelle des Femmes”. The author, who was educated at the court of the Duchy of Milan, distinguished himself among the notable humanists of his time thanks to his position as secretary to Francesco II Sforza. Capra wrote his text in vernacular prose, reworking classical models and proposing a reinterpretation of Petrarch, Boccacio, and other contemporary writers. This study aims to show the originality of Capra’s work in the face of traditional cultural and literary values which he managed to turn in favour of sixteenth-century women.

In 2017, the first diversion program for non-native adults was introduced in Quebec. The general alternative measures program involves the participation of restorative justice professionals to orchestrate these measures. This article presents secondary analyses of qualitative data collected as part of a research study conducted by a team at Laval University. It aims to shed light on the subjective experience of restorative justice professionals in integrating the program into their professional lives, through the lens of professional identity. The results, by showing that the integration of this program has generated numerous (re)flections among mediators and a revitalization of their professional culture, also reveal issues related to the deployment of restorative justice within the program and the criminal justice system, and the access to social justice in general.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is associated with numerous benefits for workers and organizations. However, its novel capabilities are likely to generate fears for the sustainability of their jobs and reluctance to use AI among humans. In this study, the role of trust is studied in the use of AI among workers, as well as the ability of the explainability of the algorithm to promote trust. To achieve this, a randomized experimental design was used. The results reveal that trust promotes the intention to use AI, but that explainability does not contribute to the development of trust. In addition, explainability had an unexpectedly deleterious effect on the intention to use AI.
