Findings from youth research have shown that, due to the development of the transitional phase of “emerging adulthood”, the family has become increasingly significant for young adults as a source of support and as a safety net. In contrast, care leavers are confronted with a relatively abrupt transition to independent living. However, international studies have shown that the family also plays a significant role during the status passage of leaving care — as an arena of concrete social relationships, as a normative model and ideal, as a biographical experience and memory, as a connection to family traditions and practices, and as an important contextual factor for resilience and identity formation. The first section of this paper describes the various links between care leavers and their families based on a literature review. In the second section, the biographical relevance of the family is highlighted based on the example of a qualitative interview study about the educational pathways of 20- to 27-year-old care leavers. The study shows the various influences of family links on the educational careers of young people during and after out-of-home care. From the findings, we derive some consequences for professional work with families in out-of-home care and for professional support and guidance during the status passage of leaving care.

Objective Meeting the mental health needs of the population is a priority of the Quebec government. To do so, it is important to evaluate and improve the quality of mental health care in primary and community care settings, particularly with respect to person-centred and recovery-oriented care. The purpose of this study is to identify existing quality indicators that measure these dimensions, and to report on their strengths and weaknesses.

Some individuals only show a limited response to commonly-used treatments in early intervention for psychosis. In such cases, many advocate the use of adjunct interventions, such as Adventure Therapy (AT). A thematic analysis of interviews conducted with 15 adults followed at the Early Intervention for Psychosis services of the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal identified six therapeutic components perceived by the participants as significant in their experience of an AT program: a) space-time outside of everyday life; b) space-time in nature; c) programming; d) emotionally intense adventure activities; e) group life; and f) inclusion of health practitioners.

In Morbihan, a department in the French region of Brittany, there are many “self” discovery practices involving the local megaliths. The schemes offered by these practices are thought to allow the practitioner to develop new relationships between the “self and self” and the “self and the other” by using their body and senses as factors essential to a personal transformation. At the heart of these practices, participants are invited to engage in a sensorial learning journey and cultivate their bodily attention by concentrating on their body and their sensations when they approach the megaliths and touch them. In this article, I analyze the somatic learning and personal transformation processes at the heart of these practices. More precisely, I focus on the three elements that account for the effectiveness of the practices and build the experience of the participants: the progressive learning of a sensorial language, the interpretation of somatic imagery, and the execution of bodily techniques. My theoretical reflections on these elements highlight the mechanisms that make these practices a continuum where “spiritual” experiences manifest as somatic experiences.

An examination of how human rights frameworks are enacted in the everyday lives of disabled children and their families has been an ongoing part of the Inclusive Early Childhood Service System project (IECSS). In previous work, we have explored whether rights for disabled children were being honored locally as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). In this paper we turn to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to further examine whether disabled children's rights to early childhood education, care, and intervention services are being honored. In this analysis we focus on SDG 3, 4, and 10 in localized Canadian contexts by reflecting on IECSS project findings, and then turn to a discussion of the global context through the experiences of our International Advisory Committee members. To conclude the article, we outline a call for the future using SDG 11 and 16 focused on creating dialogue between theoretical positions to center the everyday experiences of disabled children and their families.

This study examined the role of emotional competence in the educational success of adult students in vocational training in Quebec. A questionnaire measuring emotional competence, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and educational success was administered to 177 vocational training students during and after their training. Results suggest that basic emotional skills are directly related to student's educational success. For students with low anxiety and depressive symptoms, high emotional regulation helps achieve educational success, which is not the case for students with more severe symptoms. Prioritization of interventions for at-risk students is discussed.

The objective of the contribution is to show how the general public and victims produce psychologizing explanations on intimate partner violence. The results analysis of three studies from a psychosocial and feminist perspective shows the social regulations at stake in psychologization and the psychological motivations that may underlie its use. These observations allow us to discuss the psychological and social functions underlying the process of psychologization, which can function both as a strategy for concealing violence and as symbolic protection against the threats it poses. The observations demonstrated the relevance of understanding the complexity of these two functions in order to support survivors in a feminist clinical practice.

This article looks at experiences of obtaining psychiatric diagnoses by women who have also experienced sexist violence, as well as the effect of said diagnoses on their care trajectories in public services in Quebec. We discuss the ways in which different diagnoses, sometimes divergent or potentially erroneous, influenced their access to services to which they were entitled or that seemed better adjusted to their needs. Analyses are grounded in 20 semi-directed interviews conducted in 2021 with psychiatrized women, a project done in partnership with the Regroupement des groupes de femmes de la région de la Capitale-Nationale.

Children who show early signs of borderline pathology have often had experiences with primary caregivers that have jeopardized the development of play and of the transitional space, where inner and outer realities meet while preserving their distinct nature. This article proposes a theoretical and clinical reflection to shed light on the implications of precarious conditions of primary care on the child's ability to play. First, the authors examine the role of the primary caregivers in facilitating the emergence of symbolic play and their failures in this regard with children who show early signs of borderline pathology. The authors then propose that the young patients' play reflects a mode of functioning characterized by overflowing imagination or strong inhibition, both of which lead to impoverished psychic functioning. Two clinical illustrations support these reflections.

Several decades may elapse between a sexual assault on a person and the filing of a civil action, especially when the victim was underage at the time of the assault. In this type of situation, extinctive prescription can adversely affect the victim's recourse and indeed, may extinguish the right to obtain indemnification even before the victim has realized the existence of a causal relation between the wrongful act and the injury suffered. In these cases, parents acting in their capacity as tutors may also be unable to act on behalf of their pupils. Suspension of prescription raises several issues relating to the parents' role as tutors as well as to their duty to protect their children. This comment analyses the case of Christensen v. Roman Catholic Archbishop of Québec and aims at encouraging the courts to examine the sensitive issues surrounding the sexual abuse of children in light of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
