AbstractTreating depression is an effective population suicide prevention strategy: recent evidence from Scandinavian studies This article's objective is to signal to the Quebec and the francophone audience of public planners and decision makers, clinical and suicide prevention workers, staff, relatives as well as the public of these recent breakthrough findings that provides strong evidence now that increasing the treatment of depression is an effective suicide prevention strategy. The article summarizes the evidence published recently and then critically reviews the methods and if the evidence fits within a complete public health perspective demonstration of an effective suicide prevention strategy. It highlights that the treatment of depression may not only decrease suicide rates but have much more larger public health effects by decreasing the disability associated with depression and have impact on future generations at risk of depression and suicide. The obstacles to developing such nation-wide strategy of increasing the treatment of depression will be highlighted with specific reference to the situation in Quebec.

ABSTRACTExisting hypotheses regarding psychological mediation of disorders in initiating and maintaining sleep only partially explain the phenomenon of insomnia, particularly in aging individuals. In this article we review existing nonpharmacological treatments of insomnia and propose a new way of conceptualizing and treating disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep. The model, based on cognitive and information processing factors, is then used to propose novel approaches to intervention. Because of the prevalence of sleep disruptions in older adults and the limitations of existing pharmacological and psychological treatments with this population, the assumptions of the model and the proposed intervention are explored with particular reference to aging individuals.

This article proposes some reflections on research or interventions relating to issues that concern and affect us. The English term would be “insider”. As researchers and social workers with an immigrant background, our personal experiences are also part of the issues we deal with concerning vulnerable populations: the descendants of racialized migrants, the children of racialized mixed couples, LGBTQ migrants and racialized persons. We will therefore address, through our respective objects of engagement, how working with racialized populations re-actualizes experienced forms of exclusion while giving rise to new questionings feeding our research.

Professionals working at the Pediatric Transcultural Clinic at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital have been using a specific tool for twenty years when working with Montreal's culturally diverse population: the transcultural evaluation grid. The development of this tool is based on several theoretical and methodological aspects of ethno-psychiatry. It can be used for social workers to help identify and consider the impacts of migration journeys and changes in cultural references in order to better understand patients' difficulties. It also emphasizes the importance of patients' interpretation of their problems according to their beliefs, and personal and cultural points of view. Wider distribution of this tool could enrich social workers' evaluation of patients from culturally diverse backgrounds.

This article presents the initial results of an exploratory research whose general objective is to validate the predictors of engagement and perseverance, identified by a literature review, for students and professors in innovative programs in first cycle at the Université de Sherbrooke. More precisely, it is question of exploring quantitatively and qualitatively the characteristics of engagement and perseverance of the main actors of the program. Three innovative undergraduate programs at the University of Sherbrooke are examined : the baccalaureate in electrical engineering, the baccalaureate in computer engineering and the pre-doctorate in medicine. This article presents data from students' questionnaires.

Several factors may influence the dynamics of investigative interviews conducted with children who are suspected victims of sexual abuse. This study examines the effect of the characteristics of the child, the nature of the sexual abuse, and support by the interviewer on children's collaboration. A total of 90 interviews conducted by police officers with children aged between four and 13 years old were transcribed and analyzed using grids to measure the support and non-support offered by interviewers and the cooperation or reluctance expressed by the children. Results from MANOVA indicate that interviewers behave similarly regardless of the age of the child and that young children cooperate significantly less than pre-teens. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that the support offered by the interviewer is the most important factor associated with both cooperation and resistance on the part of the child. The level of interviewer support is an even better predictor of children's resistance than the characteristics of the children or of the sexual abuse. The discussion underlines the importance of interviewer support in helping children collaborate when they are discussing sexual abuse.
