The regulatory framework for psychotherapy in Quebec—the Nouvelles modalités d'encadrement de la psychothérapie, NMEP—which came came into being in 2012, defines psychotherapy and regulates its practice. Pursuant to these regulations, the majority of social workers were no longer allowed to practice psychotherapy. Given a certain overlap between social work and psychotherapy, we examined the impacts of the NMEP on social workers by administering a questionnaire, to which 74 Quebec social workers responded. The results indicate that the impacts differ depending on whether the respondents have a psychotherapist permit, do not have a permit or have attempted to obtain one.

Objectives We have interviewed psychiatrists from different generations at the Département de psychiatrie de l'Université de Montréal to discern the history lived and told by those who have made (and still make) the history of the Department. The goal of this approach was to grasp the past in order to enlighten the future of the Département de psychiatrie de l'Université de Montréal.Method Thirteen psychiatrists of the department have been interviewed about their perspective on the history of the Département de psychiatrie de l'Université de Montréal.Results Interviews have identified an issue in the communication of history among the Department. Indeed, most of the younger psychiatrists were not aware of some of the main events and figures which were part of the development of the Department. The older psychiatrists mention Dr Camille Laurin as an important figure of the Department's early stages. Psychotherapy, education and clinical practice appear as key aspects of the Department's history. Conclusion Many aspects of the Department's history appear unknown to the younger psychiatrists. A course on History of Psychiatry, including the Department's history, would be a great addition to the psychiatry residency program.

Existe-t-il une approche d'inspiration psychanalytique spécifiquement adaptée aux troubles anxieux ?
More informationAbstractPsychoanalytic treatments have been relegated to a secondary status in the current recommendations concerning the treatment of anxiety disorders. This is due to the lack of controlled studies pertaining to these psychotherapies, as well as to the late adaptation of psychoanalysis to the contemporary trends of psychopathology and psychotherapy focusing on symptoms. The recent development of a manualized psychotherapy for the treatment of panic disorder, the Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP), is a good example of such an adaptation (Milrod et al., 1997). PFPP appears to be effective (Milrod, 2001). This type of psychotherapy is probably neither more nor less effective than other forms of psychotherapy if one considers the results of empirical research on the comparative effectiveness of psychotherapies. The question formulated by the title of this paper is perhaps less central as is that of the nature of the active factors of the psychotherapeutic process.

As part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Maison St-Jacques (MSJ), the clinical team met with ten former participants of its psychotherapy groups to gather testimonials of their experience through semi-structured interviews. The participants' discourse was analyzed using a methodology inspired by thematic analysis used in qualitative research. Taking one's place within a group, in some way a “microcosm of society,” seems to have enabled greater self-knowledge and tolerance of periods of suffering. The encounter with others' experiences and ways of being was reported by most participants as a significant aspect of their experience that lead them to question parts of themselves previously left in the shadows. In other words, the experiences reported by the participants shed light on the value of the group setting offered at the MSJ.

This paper text seeks to locate psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy on a continuum, in light of the notion of the “work of transference.” These different settings give the conditions for a “transference demand upon the mind” of both the analysand and the analyst, and the conditions for the interpretation “of” the transference and “in” the transference. These three forms of the work of transference are examined. The paper proposes that the demand coming from the transference at work requires from the therapist not only a solid training but also a personal and intimate experience of transference within a personal analysis. Finally, the text puts forward the idea of a radical break between psychoanalytic psychotherapies and “psychoanalytically informed therapies.”

This article presents theoretical and clinical elaborations concerning the challenges faced by psychodynamic psychotherapists during the treatment of children who have experienced early relational traumas. For example, an incomplete psychological development, an epistemic distrust, difficulties in managing the relational distance with the psychotherapist, and the idealization of abusive parents, among others. The text also addresses some of the attitudes and techniques that should be favored in the individual psychotherapy of traumatized children. Brief clinical vignettes illustrate the authors' ideas. In conclusion, the article outlines the expected progression of the abused child in the context of psychodynamic psychotherapy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the rapid migration of clinicians and patients from the physical to the virtual clinic. Although telepractice existed long before the pandemic, its use remained marginal and its clinical implications were rarely discussed. Although a large number of clinicians now routinely offer distance psychotherapy, even if the situation does not require it, many practical and theoretical questions remain. This article therefore proposes a reflection drawn from observations derived from distance psychotherapy and in-person psychotherapy. We will discuss more specifically the characteristics of the therapeutic framework and the different clinical settings that result from it. We will also examine the structuring role of spatiality and temporality, understood as a priori conditions for the development of discourse in therapy. Our exploration will then turn to the role of the body in clinical work, on the nature of the psychic representation of self, of the other and of discourse. We will conclude by presenting various elements of discussion related to body-mind models and the current state of the socio-cultural field.
