AbstractIn principle, the process of Psychomechanics is a hypothetico-deductive one. It starts with a basic requirement—an "inevitable"—and proceeds deductively until one arrives at the facts. For example, Guillaume, in Temps et Verbe (1965), states that all languages build their verbal systems from a universal present tense α/ω. His model for Russian, like Meney's (1974a abn b, 1975), is based on this assumption, which creates problems of internal coherence and fails to satisfy the minimum critérium of observational adequacy. I am proposing a replacement hypothesis, limited to the indicative, that rejects the division into periods of time in favour of combining two aspectual systems, one lexical, the other grammatical. This solution, which aligns Russian with exclusively aspectual languages, commends itself because it is simple, coherent, empirically efficient and in conformity with semiology.

AbstractThe heuristic suitability of dominant Western geopolitical approaches to the Ukrainian crisis is examined through an examination of their epistemological foundations. The most influential discourses today, essentially culturalist, derive from widely disputed paradigms of International Relations and have trouble overcoming the methodological biases and limitations of realist, statist, or neorealist approaches. Deconstruction of the various models reveals the self-same ethnocentric and prescriptive notion of a world order that serves as a foundation for a full-blown “hegemonistic consensus.” Such a vision of international relations however, structured around the assumption of u.s. pre-eminence, is unable to address the complexity of a conflict reducible neither to age-old Russian imperialism nor to a return of the Cold War.

Indirect translation is a phenomenon often overlooked and underestimated in studies on the reception in China of Victor Hugo, and other French writers, long considered as mere bilateral exchanges between China and France. In the light of the theory of cultural transfer and in particular of the notion of third established by Michel Espagne, while using the methodological tools of research on indirect translation, this article aims to reveal the intermediary role of Soviet Russia in the reception of Victor Hugo in China and to shed light by this example on the importance and the mechanism of indirect translation. Through the analysis of Gavroche's indirect translations made through the USSR, as well as the examination of Hugo's romantic image in China which is imbued with Sovietized Marxist theories, it is finally demonstrated that Soviet Russia exerts a profound influence on the Chinese institution of literature and thus plays the decisive role of third in the Chinese reception of the French writer, not only in terms of circulation and translation, but also in that of interpretation. It is in this perspective that the article proposes to study linguistic and cultural encounters in literary reception.
