    Many representatives of the hermeneutic tradition, including Umberto Eco, Paul Ricoeur and George Steiner, believe that a literary text is incomplete without the collaboration of the reader, and expect this reader to respect the text's internal coherence. In this context, it seems obvious that a translator is first and foremost a reader, yet this apparently simple observation has many implications. This paper will first show how the literary nature of a text influences the act of reading and of translating it, and then focus on the tension involved in reading a poem for the purpose of translating it. Five models of the poetry translation process will be compared: those of Robert De Beaugrande, Andrei Bantaş, Francis R. Jones, Christopher Millis and Robert Bly. These scholars adopt a hermeneutic approach insofar as they base the translation process on a close reading of the source poem, yet seek to counterbalance its effects by including a necessary stage of revision, minimizing the translator's subjective intervention. The analysis of these models will show what part the act of reading really plays within the process of translating a poem.

    This paper offers an account of the way Nishitani presents the problem of evil and sin in Religion and Nothingness, trying to prove that this question has an essential role in the deepening of self-awareness towards nothingness and emptiness. In order to see Nishitani's thought in a wider horizon, it is briefly compared to Ricoeur's analysis of the same problem. One can then conclude that, despite the differing metaphysical standpoints of the two philosphers, they tend to agree on the question of evil because of its aporetic nature, forcing to « think more an differently ».

    AbstractWorkers who work with drug addicts in needle-exchange and methadone-provision programs encounter ethical challenges every day. This article presents the results of a qualitative analysis of the ethical problems encountered by 26 Montreal workers in their daily practice. The data was analysed using an ethical framework inspired by Paul Ricoeur's ethical approach. Problems were classified in two categories. First, those linked to the political, legal, or organizational context, notably, the prosecution of drug addicts, the discrepancy between technocratic management and ground-level realities, and inconsistencies in practices and services. Second, the problems mentioned involve the relationships that develop during these programs related to access for certain people (e.g. minors, pregnant women, violent individuals) to services, outreach workers' relationships with the people being helped, confidentiality, power relationships, and moralizing. This study shows the complexities inherent in these problems and the necessity of analysing them in an ethical system that integrates all dimensions of harm reduction intervention.

    How to explain the connection between images and language ? More precisely, how to give an account of the double dimension, both linguistic and figurative, that language presents in rhetorical figures ? The present article attempts to show that in order to answer this question, Ricoeur had to develop not only a semantics of the image in La métaphore vive, where the image is conceived as a part of the process of metaphorical predication, but also, as evidenced by his article “Image and language in psychoanalysis,” a semiotics of the image — i.e., a non-linguistic semiotics making it possible to grant the “pictorial” dimension that language acquires in becoming figurative. And to the extent that the semantics and semiotics of the image deploy two distinct models — one predicative, the other substitutive — which alternately describe the schematism of the imagination, it becomes clear that two approaches of the creative imagination are required to account for figurative language.

    Ce mémoire a pour but de montrer que le premier tournant herméneutique de Paul Ricœur en 1960 gravite essentiellement autour de la problématique de la volonté mauvaise. Nous soutenons autrement dit que Ricœur a initialement donné une tournure herméneutique à sa philosophie pour penser le serf-arbitre, c’est-à-dire pour penser la liberté captive d’elle-même. Afin de rendre compte adéquatement de ce tournant, notre attention sera principalement dirigée vers le deuxième tome de la Philosophie de la volonté de Ricœur, Finitude et culpabilité. Notre question se pose ainsi : comment et pourquoi, dans une problématique du mal, Ricœur entame-t-il son tournant herméneutique?
