This article considers Annibal Caro’s religious sentiments during the years of his most intense comic and paradoxical production: the pre-Tridentine period from 1536 to 1543, a time of tense expectation in Rome for significant Church reform. Although Caro’s religious beliefs never raised suspicions of heterodoxy, we shall see that both his paradoxical prose in Berni’s style, and his only comedy (which he conceived at the request of the Duke Pier Luigi Farnese but was never authorised by Caro to be represented or published in his lifetime), show that Erasmian influences and suggestions from Boccaccio and Aretino allowed him to safely engage in a discourse of religious dissent.

Scholarship on the diverse ways in which early modern English playwrights “translated” French textual material, dramatic and otherwise, has by now accumulated enough specific instances to justify an overview of methods and results. There are few outright translations of French plays, but the field widens considerably when adaptations and appropriations of various kinds are added to the picture. It then becomes possible to identify a variety of intertextual experiences that implicate audiences in issues of genre, religion, and politics.

A man of much learning and a man of popularisation, Charles Estienne (1514–1564) was interested in theatrical translation and edition both in Latin and in French, as well as in many other editorial and scientific activities. Interest in theatre was at the centre of Charles Estienne’s career consecrated to knowledge sharing; it manifested itself first in the French translation of a contemporary Italian comedy, re-edited at least twice. Then he produced several annotated editions for young people of a comedy by Terence, Andria. These were followed by the French translation of this same comedy, accompanied by a treatise on the Jeux des Anciens [Plays of the Ancients]. These two plays are representative of Charles Estienne’s endeavour to make the great works of from classical past as well as contemporary Italy accessible to a wider public. Above all, these texts are designed for performance, in an educational context but also simply for the pleasure of theatrical spectacle. The rendering of the French, and the rendering of readability (through lexica, annotations, commentaries, abridgements etc.) stage the source text, which would be spoken during the performance but also stage its mediator, the populariser (who translated, edited, made comprehensible and disseminated the text). Thus translation for the stage illustrated a humanist position on the transmission and sharing of knowledge: a performance of revival and popularisation.

This research aims to understand the experience of small and medium-sized business (SME) owners in the food service sector during the COVID-19 crises. Through semi-structured interviews with restaurant owners in the Outaouais region (Quebec, Canada), the authors were able to collect authentic opinions on the experiences of SME owners. The analysis of the interviews through the Nvivo software enabled us to observe that the restaurant owners went through several problems including: stress, shortage of employees, financial losses, liquidity problems, closures and re-opening, and difficulties to adapt to change. To get through this crisis, entrepreneurs had to demonstrate resilience, innovation and strategic management. The research suggests that public administrators and program evaluators should address the shortcomings raised in this research.

Although the vulnerability of refugee women is a cornerstone of access to protection, it is rarely defined beyond its common-sense meaning - the risk of suffering harm. This article presents the results of an empirical research where 12 life histories were collected from Syrian refugee women responsible for supporting their families in Lebanon (7) and Québec (5). The analysis mobilized the concept of ambivalent vulnerability (Oliviero, 2016) and showed that women and their relatives were certainly exposed to forms of adversity, but also to transformative opportunities and to elements of continuity with their life trajectories.

Given the increasing number of immigrant students in schools, the purpose of this study is to examine how they perceive their relationships with their teachers and their teachers' attitudes towards them. Data was collected from 819 students in eight Quebec high schools. Results show that 2nd generation students perceive their relationships with their teachers as less warm, while 1st generation students perceive higher expectations of success and more negative feedback compared to their peers of 3rd generation or more. Students of Haitian descent report less warm interactions with their teachers than students of 3rd generation or more. Also, 1st generation Haitian students perceive more expectations of success than 2nd generation Haitian students. The implications of these findings for practice and research are discussed.

This study aims to document the use of support services and accommodations among students with ADHD in postsecondary education, as well as examine the perceptions of the effectiveness of these resources. Data were collected by conducting in-depth individual interviews with 29 students with ADHD from Quebec colleges (n = 10) and universities (n = 19). The results show that a variety of support services and accommodation are used by participants. Additional time on exams and testing in a separate room are the most used. Perceptions of effectiveness are rather mixed, since several obstacles affect the full effectiveness of some accommodations. The voices of participants inform postsecondary institutions of the issues that must be addressed to maximize the effectiveness of their services and to provide students with an environment that allows them to perform to their potential.

With the aim of exploring some of the mechanisms and negotiations involved in family transmission, we conducted a field study based on the life story method with a group of young Montrealers in fall 2019. Qualitative data collection and analysis followed the “family novel and social trajectory” approach, as developed in clinical sociology. Through a process of “guided recollection,” research participants were encouraged to share their family histories and put into words the sources of belonging and individuality that underpin their self-identity. The article analyzes how the resulting narratives highlight various strategies used to negotiate and reshape identity. Furthermore, genealogical imperatives emerged within various modes of relation and identification, triggering imitation mechanisms that produced both suffering and resilience.
