Starting from the observation that abjection in literature produces a specific kind of vertigo in the reader, this article focuses on the way in which this type of writing possesses, in the Indo-Oceanic novels La Vie de Joséphin le fou by Ananda Devi (2003) and Za by Raharimanana (2008), the formidable capacity to question the norms and limits that found what can be called, alongside Julia Kristeva, “the social and symbolic order”. In other words, it is a matter of exploring the power of abjection that makes it possible for the story to go beyond mere socio-political satire and the jubilation of the obscene, to the benefit of more ambivalent, shifting and disturbing representations that reach into the very foundations of our humanity. We will thus seek to go beyond the stupefaction into which the violence of the writing dives, in order to consider the ways in which the abject, and the processes of rotting and swarming emerge as fertile ground for a counter-power, on both the ethical and the aesthetic levels. Because these abject shallows are also the site of a proliferating, multi-faceted anarchic life form, the speech that emerges from them, and claims to be their own, can indeed be understood as a pocket of resistance to the threat of the tyranny of the One, of the void and of the petrification that characterize postcolonial power.

In academic contexts, students are often asked to complete integrated writing tasks that require comprehension of information for text production. These complex academic tasks have frequently been studied as monolingual tasks with English speakers or English language learners studying at English-medium universities. However, as the development of scientific knowledge often involves reading in English, regardless of the language of instruction, in certain contexts, these tasks are plurilingual. At present, the experiences of students from non-English-medium universities, who are required to complete plurilingual integrated writing tasks (e.g., reading in English to write in French), have largely been ignored in research. To better support this student population, it is important to examine how users of English, not active learners, complete plurilingual integrated writing tasks in the language of instruction, in this case, French. This qualitative study examines the perceptions and reported practices of three students when completing a plurilingual integrated task while studying at a francophone university. The results show that students experience different challenges depending on their levels of language proficiency and their academic path. Future research needs to examine the roles of academic programs and professors that expect students to complete plurilingual integrated tasks in order to better understand what support is possible and desirable to ensure all students can develop their academic and disciplinary literacy.

This paper is a participative evaluation of the implementation and governance process of a pilot project in food security by the Laboratoire d’agriculture urbaine et de proximité (Labor-AT) (an urban agriculture laboratory), that is active in the Abitibi MRC (regional county municipality), in Quebec, Canada. Evaluation tools were tested, such as “Faire le point sur les conditions de succès du projet” by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec and an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). The main findings reveal the time required to develop a common vocabulary and to define a goal and common objectives that allow organizations to actively get involved in collective interests. The complementary strengths of the project coordination committee, the partnerships and the collaboration with various organizations to reach citizens, as well as the support of the local public health professionals, allow to efficiently govern the project. To achieve this, it is essential to identify clear communication channels in a multiple actors context. In conclusion, this participative evaluation process allowed to identify apprenticeships and conditions for success, in a community development perspective.

For children with special needs, integration into childcare services is essential, notably because it promotes their development. Yet, in Quebec, very few places available are actually occupied by these children. Their low representation in these environments could be due to the educators’ beliefs, which may also influence their adaptation. The goal of the present study is to explore the perspective of educators regarding the adjustment of 173 children from a clinical population. Educators’ responses to the question “Does the child benefit from the daycare?” were coded as positive, nuanced, or negative. The children’s social competence was assessed by the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation scale (SCBE; LaFrenière et al., 1995). Most perceptions were positive (71%). Analysis of the factors influencing educators’ perceptions revealed a significant association with social competence and child diagnosis, but not with type of daycare. Thus, the educators mostly perceive integration of children with special needs positively.

Supported by a framework that adopts the notion of professionalization from a tridimensional perspective (competencies, identity, and culture), this qualitative research sought to better understand faculty conceptions of student professionalization in the context of pre-service training in university health programs. The results show that the planned learning trajectories are part of a work / training system and are marked by professionalizing modalities focused on action and reflection. According to the teachers’ conceptions, simulation and problem-based learning situations contribute to the development of skills, the portfolio to identity construction, and discussions on the appropriation of the professional culture.

The beauty of the Languedoc games, very old, is bound to its codified esthetics, resting on the correctness of the technical gestures with regard to a number of attributes, sequences and ritualized activities. Now, since the 1960s, the adoption of certain tactical or individualistic aspects questions the essence of this esthetics following the sportification, defined as the process of adoption of the values chairing over the practice of sports activities of high competition and the requirements linked to their public expression. As a result, the inflection of the esthetic criteria connected to the production of the show appears as an answer to the constraints of its broadcasting and the new sensibilities of the audiences. Yet, after analysis, it turns out that the original symbolic content is strong enough so that the show of the games preserves for the main part its traditional meaning and esthetics.

As events contributing to the distinction of territories in the competition that they are engaged to retain their inhabitants and attract visitors, fairs and festivals are the object of an attention of the researchers only since about twenty years. Following the example of other populations of the countries of the South, villagers of Kabylia try to revitalize the local development following the failure of the public policies. But to what extent? Are these efforts fruitful? After examination, it appears that if all the aimed objectives are not reached, these initiatives contributed to increase the available resources for the development of the concerned regions.

This article defends the thesis that underground artistic of the 1970s was integrated into the Establishment at the dawn of a new cultural ideology, cultural democracy, which addresses a new public. The implementation of programs as Youth Perspectives, Local Initiatives and Explorations allowed to finance projects as Vive la rue Saint-Denis ! New public are joined with sociocultural events. It is the era of sociocultural community development, so appreciated by a precise croud having for spokesman Yves Robillard, member of Fusion des arts inc. After the crisis of October, it is a question of integrating into the socioeconomic system a youth against cultural, pro-independence (in Quebec), marxist and in unemployed. As a matter of fact, counterculture artists or the politicized artistic neo-avant-garde observed share with the State a set of humanist values and of professional interests, characteristics of the Welfare State, even if their purposes are not necessarily the same.

Wherever tourism develops, the local population is involved and affected. The BESTandermatt long-term and companion study described in this article has been investigating the sociocultural and socioeconomic changes provoked by the construction of a tourist resort in Andermatt (Switzerland) since 2008 and shows concerns of inhabitants at all stages of the construction and operation of the resort. In order not only to gain knowledge in the study regarding the subjective perceptions of the 25 respondents, but also to support the population in the process of change, the surveys were combined with activating methods, inherent to a “participatory action research” in which these respondents can influence both the direction and methods of research. After investigation, it appears that this approach promotes standpoints of local social actors in front of tourist officers and the authorities. Processes of development and change shaped in this way strengthen social cohesion and mutual understanding as self-awareness but also confrontation with otherness may enable the people involved to change their perspective.

The project of care of a private psychiatric hospital for teenagers articulates in an innovative approach of the management of the patient care, studies and sociocultural community development, including artists’ presence around a circassian speciality developed by the establishment. The professionals sociocultural community developpers seem here closely associated to the medical team in a global and multidimensional design of the care. However, while the interweaving of three logics is validated by the institution, the empirical investigation reveals tensions between the visions and the roles of the various categories of professionals. It demonstrates that the function of the sociocultural community development, still widely subjected to the logic and to the imperatives of the care, has to fight for the respect of its specificity.
