Building on a view of both narration and argumentation as dynamic concepts, this paper considers ways of assessing the credibility of narrative arguments constructed in empirical examples of conversational discourse. I argue that the key in any such exercise is to pay close attention to both structural and pragmatic details, particularly how conversational storytelling gets embedded in the surrounding discourse and how the way this is discursively accomplished vis-à-vis the narrators’ multilayered audience may be reflective of their argumentative goals.

According to several interpreters, it would be impossible to establish a well-defined argumentation in the discourse on the bread of life (Jn 6:35-58). Considering that literary criticism has proved incapable of explaining it, we will seek rather to determine the model used by the author to highlight the principle which governs the development of his thought and ensures the coherence of the whole up to v. 58. After reviewing the main solutions favored by recent exegesis, we will show how Greco-Roman rhetoric accounts for the arrangement of this passage and its argumentation.

To get a better comprehension of the nature of argumentation, we need to understand the context in which this practice produces its particular benefits. I hold that this context consists basically in the presence of two conditions: 1) the need for cooperation, and 2) the possibility of dissent. I argue that contributing to the coordination of collective action is the particular benefit argumentation is able to produce in this context and that obtaining this benefit constitutes its main function. Thus, the main function of argumentation is not epistemic. Truth is important when we argue, but epistemic improvement is not the main aim of argumentation, even if this benefit may be a common result of it.

I argue for broadening contemporary argumentation theory’s normative scope by introducing a novel category of argumentative norms that synthesize virtue-theoretic and procedural rules. These norms are derived from munazara, a discipline distinguished by its systematic integration of ethics into procedural rules. Framed within normative democratic theory, I advocate the requirement of non-authoritarian argumentation for regulating public debate, targeting how reasons are exchanged, not which reasons are offered. My contention is that munazara’s ethical-procedural norms not only enrich argumentation’s normative toolbox but also enable the operationalization of democratically enhancing public debate.

There is a revival of interest in transcendental arguments, which used to be very popular in recent decades but were progressively abandoned because of doubts concerning their plausibility and even their validity, although of course some philosophers never ceased to use them. My paper deals with a particular model of transcendental arguments which can be employed in the area of practical philosophy, elaborated by A.W. Moore. I examine an application of this model in the construction of a complex argument by Christine Korsgaard which aims at establishing the authority of moral norms. I discuss its structure and the relations of its premises and of its conclusion to certain realist and anti- realist positions in metaethics, I compare it to alternative approaches to the same problem, and I try to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.
