AbstractThis article examines the representation of the world of nature in fiction for young people published in Quebec. The work of novelist Nicole M.-Boisvert is critical to a study of the popularization of the natural sciences to the extent it was inspired by her many trips throughout the world. Unlike men, who have attempted for centuries to affirm their superiority by controlling nature, the young girls in Boisvert's stories seek to protect the environment and the animal species that evolve in it. If this narrative practice takes the form of a criticism of modernity and of reason as instrument, it confers an ethical character on the actions of the protagonists engaged in a process of creation. Like the naturalists who inventoried animal species as they were discovered with the aim of systematic classification, the young female characters cull data from the encyclopaedia of natural sciences to demonstrate that non-human nature possesses value in and of itself, apart from any utilitarian purpose, and that it must be respected accordingly.

Electoral slogan or cultural policy? The cultural sovereignty championed by Premier Robert Bourassa sparked important political, social and cultural debates during the Liberal government's two terms of office from 1970 to 1976. This debate puts the spotlight on actors: two ministers from the Bourassa government - Jean-Paul L'Allier to Communications and Denis Hardy to Cultural Affairs – some members of the opposition in Quebec, Minister Gerard Pelletier at the federal level and a group from civil society, the Tribunal de la culture, chaired by the anthropologist Marcel Rioux. In connection with this debate, there is a broadening of the very notion of culture which is no longer limited to arts, letters and heritage. The quest for a cultural policy for Quebec is thus closely linked to the assertion of a communications policy, which raises constitutional obstacles with the federal government.

This article, the result of detailed analysis of the cover illustrations of 50 Harlequin novels published between 1918 and 1984, aims to verify whether the novels' early pages in fact reflect sentimental but chaste plots based on the hero's domination over the heroine. The study relates to the composition of the images, characters' physical features and attitudes to love, and the general atmosphere suggested by the covers. The data analysed are presented in detail and the results are discussed. Besides revealing the implicit discourse of these illustrations, this study presents an analytical method that leaves little room for subjective interpretation of the images, by using a theoretical framework based on iconic and extra-iconic signifiers.

In a linguistic minority environment in Canada, where French-language schools welcome a culturally and linguistically diverse population, many eligible students begin their education with limited French skills. This article aims to shed light on the identity representations and positioning of young multilingual students from a Francophone school in the Vancouver area, who received linguistic support in a francization program. Based on an ethnographic study of sociolinguistics conducted at a Vancouver area school in 2010-2011, this article will discuss representations of the Francophone identity as expressed by francization students, as well as their investment efforts and identity positioning in relation to these representations. The results of the study will highlight feelings of inadequacy and alienation expressed by francization students who do not recognize themselves in stereotypical representations of the Francophone identity. The experiences of francization students, considered here as neo-French speakers, will illustrate the dynamics of legitimization taking place in schools and will inspire avenues for reflection on how to make the Canadian Francophone school system more inclusive.
