Despite an unprecedented mobilization of Quebec education academics against Bill 23, it was adopted in December 2023. The Minister of Education's intention is to introduce greater efficiency for student success. Why are academics mobilizing? What strategies are they using? Our article answers both these questions. Our theoretical approach is inspired by the sociology of social movements. Our method is based on documentary analysis and opportunity-based participant observation. Our analysis shows that most academics in the educational sciences are against the bill, and that their mobilization is attributable to ideological factors of resistance to the proposed change.

Religion and its contemporary transformations have been largely analyzed through the lens of secularization, globalization and subjectivation. Nonetheless, the impact and influence of environmental knowledges on contemporary religiosities have remained largely unexplored until lately. This paper questions how the ‘risk society' (Beck, 2008; Giddens, 1994) and the ‘new climatic regime' (Latour, 2015) are redirecting the social categories of ‘religion' and how it is being experimented, mobilized, emphasized, located, and thus transforming within euro-american contexts. Relying on field observations conducted in French-speaking Switzerland (2015-2022), as well as a theoretical framing centered on the ecological thought as a social practice, I will describe two important transformations related to religion's location and status newly acquired status when it comes into contact with ecological registers.

Although short stories are widely translated, the translational specificities of the genre have attracted little attention. With this article, as I retrace the editorial history of Virginia Woolf's shorter fiction in France and compare the French translations of four short stories I have retranslated, I endeavour to lay the groundwork for a conceptualization of these specificities. I propose to consider the translation of the short story through the prism of retranslation, conceived not as replacement but as coexistence. This “kaleidoscope-translation” of the short story makes it possible for translation to recreate the multiple readings the source work holds, in particular in the case of the hermeneutic challenge posed by the Woolfian short story. As with a mosaic or a patchwork, the target reader may get the complete picture of the source text by looking at different pieces combined. As the brevity of the genre constitutes an invitation to reread the story, I show that its translation should be thought of through retranslation with the publication of these multiple translations combined so as to produce a choral performance of the text. I also address some translational challenges posed by the Woolfian short story: the title, the minute lexical work required, semantic and grammatical ambiguity, and tenses.

The Histoire documentaire de la Congrégation des Missionnaires Oblats de Marie-Immaculée dans l'Est du Canada by Father Gaston Carrière, o.m.i. (1913-1985), which covers eight decades of missions in twelve volumes, reflects a representation of gender. This article examines Carrière's vision as it manifests in the various circumstances of this missionary congregation's expansion across North America. The author develops an image of a “superman,” fueled by Catholic and bourgeois perspectives. By studying the vocabulary and stylistic devices employed by Carrière, this article aims to shed new light on the various images of the missionary that are developed, images which forge an archetype that has consequences for the construction of a clerical masculinity and expressions of virility.

As with other forms of alternative media, podcasting provides lesser-heard voices with an audience. In a linguistic minority context, this form of media broadcasting provides minorities with access to the public sphere, and to local linguistic practices that are rarely present in the more official media. This is notably the case in Acadie of New Brunswick, where podcasting offers linguistic and media emancipation by allowing people to speak not only “in” French but “in their” French. We propose an overview of available podcasts, emphasizing the public space afforded to the vernacular. We then focus on the case of a particular podcast (Cosser t'en penses?) built around the reclamation of chiac, a stigmatised linguistic practice. In keeping with the ideology of “by and for,” this podcast offers a linguistic safe space where the use of minoritized linguistic traits serves as a tool for differentiation, inclusion, and, inevitably, exclusion.
