This qualitative study constitutes the empirical component of a project on the informational behaviour of members of the Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois (UNEQ), a writers' union located in Montreal, Quebec. Using a theoretical framework inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's work in the literary field, also found in literature on the topic, the study describes the practices of writers in terms of their needs, research, use and dissemination of information by bringing together data gathered via a survey, an analysis of online contents, and interviews. The results show that the advantages and disadvantages of digital media sometimes create a sense of incoherence among the resources used and the online dissemination of information. Furthermore, it suggests that the relationship with information professionals could be reconfigured at the creation of the text stage, with regards to the organisation of the digital paratext, and in order for the online tools available to writers to be understood. That being said, this relationship would need to be part of a larger change in the field, since the current perceptions of legitimation continue to follow the traditional paths of the illusio.

Why wish to talk about her research and, above all, have the desire to transmit it through a novel and, furthermore, a crime novel? What were the challenges encountered both in terms of research and fictional narrative, and, in contrast, what were the benefits of this other form of writing? These are the questions that this essay intends to answer by exploring the intersection of scientific research in law and sociology of law with fiction literature when these two discourses are struggling with a subject which is disturbing by nature, magnitude and severity such as the extreme of genocidal violence. The contribution of this article to further reflection lies essentially in the “inside” approach to the problem, as the author has herself embarked on this writing adventure through a novel, largely nourished by her own research, published under the title Un Silence de pierre et de cendre. In doing so, this essay is part of the growing field of interdisciplinary studies combining the field of letters with sociology, history, law, etc., putting literature at the heart of the flow of ideas.

Taking a step back from its negative connotations, this dossier examines failure as a critical revelation of formal or institutional mechanisms and norms, as a driving force behind artistic creation, as a lever for a collective creative process, or even as an overplayed finality of the creative act itself. Its contributions trace the potential epistemological contours of multiple aesthetic variations of failure, resolutely placed under the sign of surprise, rewriting, deviation and derision.
