This article introduces a brief history of French language zine culture in Quebec. Building on a study of its institutional and economic framework, it addresses the generic transformations of the zine genre as a medium, in relation to its relationship with politics. Four case studies – Requiem (1974-1979), edited by Norbert Spehner; Yé-yé, journal des musiques d'agrément (1983-1990), edited by Richard Baillargeon; Dirty Plotte (1988-1990), edited by Julie Doucet; and Ce que je sais de moi (2017), authored Shushanna Bikini London – are used to illustrate the transition from a “personalization of politics” to a “politics of shared intimacies”. Changes on the generic, institutional, economic, and technological levels, providing the background and accompanying this transition, crystallize Quebec's zine culture around Montreal's scene. In turn, Montreal's zine scene contributes to redefine zine culture's place in Quebec's cultural field.

This article addresses the ways in which distance by way of the notion of the radical other highlights the isolation felt by the protagonist of the comic strip Shenzhen (2000) by Guy Delisle. I argue that this notion of distance informs the aesthetic of the book. The character evolves apart, psychologically separated from the environments he frequents, incapable of communicating or even communing with the other. Thus, I show that Guy Delisle participates in the reshaping of a new image of China, very different from that which was circulating at the time of the Quiet Revolution in Québec.

Among the creators who target a young readership and who practice humor in comics, we have chosen to study the case of Jacques Goldstyn. Through his abundant universe, we limit our remarks to his Van l'inventeur series. We chose this series because it covers two decades and because its five volumes present a certain uniformity. Our objective for this article is to identify the most frequent humorous devices in the Van l'inventeur comic series by Jacques Goldstyn. In order to achieve this objective, we consider it relevant to paint a portrait of the author-illustrator to better understand his humorous universe. Then, we overview the concept of the attractions of the book (Saricks 2005; 2009), because the humorous devices useful to our subject are directly linked to it. Then, we present our methodology where a grid of different humorous processes (Montésinos-Gelet, DeRoy-Ringuette and Dupin de Saint-André, 2021) is used in order to draw up a quantitative portrait of their use. Our results regarding the boards of the Van l'inventeur series are then presented.
