Re-writing 1979 - Let us imagine what the French economy would have been in 1979 if the international situation had been less troubled or if France's economic policies had been different. By simulating a different evolution of the French economy for 1979, the METRIC model made it possible to quantify these theoretical views in terms of the specific consequences of specific events or decisions. As a result of this exercice, it emerged that the various mesures of economic policy taken in 1979 and the different aspects of the international context did not equally influence the economy. Two events were particularly significant. First, there was the rise in oil prices, whose direct effects on growth and inflation were limited, but which had great impact on the trade balance. Then, there was the increase of the various deductions and contributions for health and welfare, which significantly reduced growth, but which partially made possible to balance public finances.
