At the beginning of the eighteenth century, King Louis XIV initiated the ambitious project of publishing all royal legislative texts from the reign of Hugues Capet onwards. Until 1790 the royal chancery was responsible for the first series, known as «Recueil des ordonnances » , which was continued between 1804 and 1849 by the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. Originally conceived of as a juridical resource, after the end of the Old Regime the Recueil became a historical collection of royal laws up to 1514. Between 1883 and 1990 the Académie des sciences morales et politiques directed publication of catalogues of the acts of Francis I andHenry II, as well as the texts of ordonnances issued by the kings of France from 1515 onwards. Since 1990, the University of Paris-IV (now in association with the CNRS and the Archives Nationales) has continued the project, which is currently being adapted to modern editing and publishing technologies. The project launched by Louis XIV provides an essential and unparalleled resource for studying the evolution of royal power in France, France’s social and institutional development, and the evolution of historical concepts and methods.
