Cinema and culture have educed a large number of new genres in literature, some of which are more renowned and livelier than others. This article analyzes a little-known genre that today has almost been entirely forgotten: the ciné-roman-photo (“cinema-photo-comics”), a comic strip-style narrative using cinematic imagery, the height of which lasted from 1955 to 1965. After presenting the distinctive features of this genre and the challenges it poses to narrated film, this article will analyze two typical examples of cinema-photo-comics (one comprising eight pages and the other comprising fifty) taken from Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (adapted from the novel of the same name by Noël Calef). This analysis will bring to light their similarities and differences, as well as offer a more concrete interpretation of one aspect of cinema-photo-comics, that is, the use of stills in place of frames. The aesthetics of such a choice are evaluated through the lens of its limitations in which, at first glance, very little seems possible or permitted to the adaptation of a cine-roman-photo film.

The paper discusses the problems of maritime boundaries after the conclusion of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. After a description of the different zones distinguishd by the new convention, the author inquires into the consequences of this territorial partitioning of the sea which leaves only a few large regions of High Seas. While in former times the sea was the territory of free navigation, it is becoming increasingly « privatized », to the benefit of the industrialized countries which dispose of hich technology to exploit the ressources of the sea. We are, in other words, moving from mare liberum to mare clausum.

SUMMARY The urban center of North Cotentin Cherbourg knew prosperity during the apogee of transatlantic sea communication. The decline of this use as a port is hardly compensated by the rise in car-ferry traffic. The latter although having conqueered the aeroplane-route from Cherbourg to Southampton as had scarcely any impact on the region of Cherbourg. The traffic is seasonal ; the tourists of whom the vast majority {they are British) are rushing to set to their holiday site or to come back from it.

AbstractThis article examines the concept of housing stability. Although the term housing stability is frequently found in the research literature, to date the concept has not been adequately defined. First, the article examines how the concept has been previously defined and identifies ways in which our understanding of the concept can be expanded. Then, the article examines two perspectives on housing stability that can be characterised as “static” and “dynamic”. Whereas static approaches emphasise maintaining people with serious mental illness in a particular housing setting for as long as possible, more dynamic perspectives recognise change and growth as essential. Housing stability from this perspective involves ensuring continuous access to housing that meets an individual's needs and helps them to meet their personal goals. These two perspectives are discussed in the context of the development of housing models in Ontario and a recent discussion paper issued by the Government of Ontario, as well as research on the housing needs and preferences of people with serious mental illness.

ABSTRACTThe notion of exclusion is generally used as a catch-all to cover a wide variety of situations. It places the primary focus on extreme situations of individuals and groups outside the sphere of regulated social exchange. It thus presents pitfalls for both sociological reflection and political action. In terms of reflection, it leads to a failure to consider the processes which, beyond these situations, foster exclusion: the precarity of work relationships, the fragility of social relationships, etc. In terms of political action, it mainly results in assistance and réintégration practices which, although essential in deteriorated situations, should not prevent us from combatting the causes of the destabilization of a wage-based society.

Phased retirement refers to a reduction in working time whether before or after the normal date of retirement, with a supplementary income that compensates, at least partially, for the reduced salary. In France as in Quebec, different mechanisms were implemented between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s. They have had relatively little success due to the economic context and the unemployment level, a high priority given to the total number of early retirement, but also the limitations of the mechanisms themselves. Nevertheless, there has been recent interest in phased retirement, in France under the August 2003 pension, in Quebec under the pressure of social actors.
