The notions of poverty held by 22 poverty-stricken men who frequent a community centre in Montreal were identified using a tool for popular education. In addition to shedding light on important aspects of poverty, the results show how the views held by these men about their own situation can in fact influence the social representations commonly conveyed regarding their situation. As a qualitative and participatory research project, the study focuses on the viewpoints of people suffering from poverty – an approach that is becoming increasingly attractive in Quebec as well as throughout the world.

SummaryConfronting the failure of the traditional school, "!'Ecole-recherche Jonathan" a public elementary school, endeavors to be a truly educational and socializing milieu. The rejection of usual institutional constraints (programs, classification, evaluation), has made possible a new organization of the physical environment and of school life. The child can arrange time and space in the educational context, as well as the act of learning itself, to suit himself. Within this framework he develops autonomy and learns to socialize himself. Among his peers from 5 to 12 years of age of both sexes, the child creates new emotional attachments based on authentic communication and increasing cooperation (rather than on competitive production and role playing). At the same time he is very quickly initiated into self-management, i.e. collective decision-making, conflict resolution and budget management of his group. The child also establishes new relationships with adults, educators and parents, based on mutual respect and friendship and on the recognition of the "social value" of each individual. It is to be hoped that children educated in this fashion will contribute in creating a society more concerned with the basic needs of each human being.
