AbstractCritique of Sensory " Reason "The Aesthetic Elaboration of the Senses in a Himalayan SocietySome of the recent efforts to launch an anthropology of the senses are based on a program, drawn from the writings of Marshall McLuhan and Walter J. Ong, of establishing a sensory ratio that would be the defining feature of each culture. This approach, we argue, limits the study of the senses to a pre-established schema and fails to recognize either the necessary plurality of the senses or the importance of culture in sensory experience. Through a series of examples, the most important of which involves the aesthetic elaboration of certain senses in two ritual complexes of the central Himalayas, we argue for greater theoretical openness in this field.

This essay shows how the term “political profiling” developed in Quebec's public space in the 2000s. It thus recalls the relations between the police forces and social movements in the 2000s, offers a synthesis of the main academic studies discussing the relations between the police and social movements in Canada and Québec, explains the history of the emergence of different notions of profiling (criminal, racial, social, political), and tries to capture the level of dissemination of the term “political profiling” today.

The following reflection proposes to shift the perspective on literary matters by reexamining the question of the ontology of literature based on the materiality of the text (its technical, media, and editorial arrangements). The identification of the phenomenon of literature, an ongoing issue in literature over the ages (up to digital literature), raises questions about the realities of a number of categories (readable, visible, audible) and systems of antinomy (substance/form, matter/meaning), opening up a much wider discussion of matter in the world. By studying a number of intellectual approaches that investigate porosities between medium and inscription (the theories of media studies and the new materialism) and a number of creations that enhance the medial part of the text (Balzac’s Physiologie du mariage, Mallarmé’s Un Coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard and Carson’s Nox), the article seeks to dismantle the essence of the phenomenon of literature into a diversity of agencies and a multitude of plastic practices.
