As events contributing to the distinction of territories in the competition that they are engaged to retain their inhabitants and attract visitors, fairs and festivals are the object of an attention of the researchers only since about twenty years. Following the example of other populations of the countries of the South, villagers of Kabylia try to revitalize the local development following the failure of the public policies. But to what extent? Are these efforts fruitful? After examination, it appears that if all the aimed objectives are not reached, these initiatives contributed to increase the available resources for the development of the concerned regions.

This article proposes a new interpretation of a controversial and important figure of early Acadian history, Charles de Menou, on the basis of an analysis of historical documents relating to his parents and family. It shows that while Charles was certainly typical of the old nobility in his general outlook and attitudes, he broke with family expectations and became estranged from his father as a result of his career in Acadia. Although Charles helped lay the foundation for a permanent colony, he also left a legacy of financial ruin and damaged reputation for his widow and children. Despite his hope that he had established a new family estate in Acadia, none of his children stayed in the colony and, in fact, they all died without leaving children of their own.

Québec provides a fascinating case study of secularization and its limits. Prior to the 1960s, this historically Roman Catholic province may have had the highest level of church attendance of any region in North America. Since the 1960s, attendance has plummeted to the point that it now is among the lowest. Many observers assume Québécois have given up on religion, holding only to a kind of« cultural Catholicism. » The author draws on extensive census and survey data to show that Catholicism in Québec remains highly pervasive, characterized by ongoing identification and the selective consumption of the Church's teachings, particularly with respect to everyday life. However, large numbers of Catholics who have limited involvement in the Church indicate that they are receptive to greater participation - if the Church can touch their lives in significant ways. These findings suggest that a renaissance of organized religion in Québec is possible but, to the extent it takes place, the key player will be the Roman Catholic Church. It is less clear whether or not the Catholic Church is both willing and equipped to provide the required response in the foreseeable future. Consequently, the current situation appears to be less a problem of demand- in the form of receptivity to meaningful ministry - as it is a problem of supply.

All languages are equally complex, but the complexity may not be similar in a given domain. The present article aims to discuss the Compensation Hypothesis (according to which isolating languages make up for simpler morphology with greater complexity in other domains, such as syntax and semantics) by examining the grammar of Vietnamese, an isolating language, the complexity of which is discussed here at three levels : morpho-phonological, syntactic-semantic and discursive.

AbstractThis article presents the results of a study of the way teachers of French conceptualize instructional content as related to classroom interaction. Specifically, teacher's perceptions of the management of their interactions was mediated through a verbal report on planning. Improvisation is reported to be a frequent behavior adopted by teachers in their responses to students' reactions. Instructional planning is mostly mental and emphasizes functional connections: content aspects are related to each other according to the needs of students. At the cognitive level, teacher planning seems to be the result of an accomodation between the instructional organizers and the potentially disorganizing aspects of the context. These descriptive results, supported by numerous excerpts, corroborate results noted in other disciplines and thus attain a certain level of generalisability.

Language policies should be designed for speakers, not languages. To this end, trust in speakers and of speakers of indigenous languages could be a guiding principle in the definition of translation policies on at least three points: the right to use one's “heart language” requires constant information on multilingualism for speakers, and also for non-speakers, of the indigenous languages of a given territory; translation and self-translation, terminography and interpreting are likely to support the choice to live in this language; training, resources and linguistic tools are required to enable the exercise of these activities. For this type of translation policy, the Breton case studied here suggests exploring the paths of descriptive rather than prescriptive terminology, dialectology, science and collaborative productions

The aim of this study was to describe the environmental adaptations made by early childhood centre (ECC) educators to support the literacy skills of the children in their group through daily activities, following professional development (training and coaching). Data were collected using questionnaires administered before and after the experiment, as well as a logbook completed by the four participating educators. Qualitative analysis reveals that, as a result of professional development, the variety and quantity of environmental adaptations proposed by the educators increased, particularly in terms of environmental writing, printouts, and literacy materials made available. In conclusion, the enrichment of the physical environment in literacy would allow, among other things, the children to access the material themselves, which would promote their interest and their involvement in early literacy activities.
