Although the eras, places and protagonists underlying the diegesis of these two bestsellers (written in English but whose French translation was just as resounding) are different, Lewis and Stoker, a hundred years apart, achieve a representation of abjection that feeds on the same aesthetic of horror (theorized by Ann Radcliffe) which served as a pillar for the development of a whole section of the “fantastique-merveilleux”, a todorovian category rooted in the unexplained supernatural, in a context where the devil seems to explicitly or implicitly pull several strings. From this perspective, with the help of a few case studies centered mainly on two manifestations of the abject — the corpse and the satanic presence, we propose to question the film adaptation of these two novels to answer the following question: does abjection — both in its psychological and phenomenological dimension as developed by Julia Kristeva, and in the cultural or anthropological aspect, as developed by Georges Bataille, although solicited in both novels, export as effectively among moviegoers who, on the one hand, are overexposed to an escalation of macabre images in Coppola’s Dracula, while, on the other hand, they must imagine them in Moll's Monk?

AbstractWoman 's Face. Between Shari'a and CustomsIn Algeria as in ail islamized societies, the conflict between modernists and fundamentalists hides another important conflict between fundamentalism and local customs. The debate about womens' veiled appearance proves it. We are attempting here to show that propagation of the fundamentalist veil manifests both an attack against maghrebian customs and against the maliki school, which for centuries has conciliated literal meaning of the religious law with local norms, litteracy and oral knowledge.Key words : Benkheira, islam, man-woman relationship, tradition, honor, fundamentalism, body

This article proposes the edition of 16 letters exchanged between Father Émile Legault, CSC, and Henri Brochet from January 31, 1938 to May 4, 1946. These letters offer interesting details on Émile Legault's sojourn in France following the visit of Henri Ghéon to Montreal and on the beginnings of the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent. A prolific author of Christian plays, an actor, producer and director of the Compagnons de Jeux—which inspired the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent—and a friend of Henri Ghéon, Henri Brochet was also the founder of the journal Jeux, Tréteaux et Personnages, the first issue of which was published October 15, 1930 and which he edited until his death.

SummaryThrough a detailed inter-textual reading of Durkheim and Mauss's works, primarily on magic and religion, this essay offers a re-evaluation and reinterpretation of Mauss's essay on magic. It argues that given the semantico-referential bias implicit in both his and his uncle's theorizing, Mauss sought a referential basis for the pragmatic (i.e. indexical) force of magical and ritual practices and the discourse that supports them. It argues further that, whether articulated by the native or the anthropologist, mana (in magic) and hau (in exchange) are attempts to give stabilizing referential value to this essentially unstable contextualizing force. Durkheim — more insistently than Mauss — found it in social effervescence, ultimately in society. Despite, both writers manifest commitment to socialism, as Mauss seems to have recognized at the end of his life, their readings of magic, ritual, and religion ironically shared many of the same epistemic presuppositions as fascism.

AbstractThe research project concerns language socialization among urban immigrant adolescents. A large number of interactions shows that among the factors that play a role in rising to peer social status and in acquiring certain language features, space seems to be important. As well, the subjects identified as leaders seem to have an affirmative and representational function in terrritorilized spaces that do not necessarily correspond to exogene categories, be they administrative, media or popular. I will attempt to determine to what extent and how territories and reference spaces are constructed, and with what characteristics they are associated with respect to language practices and identity building.

AbstractSubstance use amongst women inmates has rarely been a subject of research. Yet, psychoactive substance (PAS) use is frequent before their incarceration. Qualitative data and its subsequent analysis aim at furthering our understanding of women inmates' trajectories of alcohol and drug use that need to be better understood by practicians and researchers. From a study of mixed methodology interested in trajectories of PAS use in women inmates (before and during incarceration) from five federal incarceration establishments in Canada, three themes linked to the experience of detention in relation to PAS use emerged from the narratives; the turning point, a truce, blaming. Analysis was based on the narratives of 38 women who both stated having a problem before their incarceration with alcohol, or other drugs and who spontaneously spoke about the impact their detention had had on a personnel process as regards PAS use.

The authors of the article aim to understand how the conceptions of social practices can contribute to the reshaping of a teaching object. Specifically, they focus on the “poetry” object. They undertook a content analysis of the discourse of 32 contemporary Quebecer poets compared to that of 20 secondary school teachers to identify the complementarities and distinctions in their conceptions. At first glance, there are some common aspects where poetry is associated with work on language, self-expression, represented worldviews, and dimensions of aesthetic experience. However, the justifications provided by teachers and poets to describe these common aspects differ in several ways. The findings suggest the potential for redefining poetry as an object of teaching. This could begin with the didactic transposition of knowledge, fostering a more experiential and creative approach to poetry, as advocated by poets. This approach complements the cognitive dimension dominant in teachers’ conceptions.
