This interview, conducted in September 2021, sweeps through the major themes of the research and creative activity of French composer and sociologist François Ribac, focusing on the collaborative project “Performing Arts and Music in the Anthropocene” (2016-2019), which combined a research program (field surveys on the materiality of musical instruments and on the ecological positioning of various groups and institutions), an international seminar (“The Sound of the Anthropocene”), as well as collective actions (notably the Grand Orchestre de la Transition) involving artists, activists and inhabitants of Dijon. This program led Ribac to identify three main approaches to environmentalism: the politics of limiting the material footprint of stage production; the production of works alerting or educating the public about the ecological crisis; and finally, the co-construction of local participatory projects combining material and aesthetic dimensions. The interview also addresses research questions on environmental history and representations of nature in classical music, as well as current political issues.

Studying the aesthetics of musical quotation permits light to be shed on different types of appropriations using this process, which has been occurring throughout musical history, and to precisely distinguish, from a single convergence point, three moments in the last 50 years, that modernity, postmodernity and hypermodernity can be defined, and whose works studied here are excellent examples. Stockhausen's quotations follow the logic of modernity from 1950 to 1960: acoustic exploration, theoretic and compositional prospecting, harshness of the sonic reproduction, and organized fusion between different quotations as well as between the borrowed material and its musical environment. With Schnittke, the fusion transforms into strong heterogeneity, particular to postmodernism, with a juxtaposition of styles, and highlighting the particularly explicit contrast between the tonal-modal resurgences. In Campo's work, the quotations are intended to be playful, light, and even pleasant to the point of being comical, while being immersed in a subtle research on the playing modes or on polymetry, attributes that are usually favoured by avant-garde artists of recent decades. As noted by Bouscant with the example of Michel Gonneville and Ofer Pelz (Bouscant 2015), the use of quotation shows a desire to “surpass and renew historic material,” no matter how significant the borrowing is. It also acts as a particularly powerful method to reveal the main tendencies that govern the aesthetics of contemporary music.

This article deais with the audiovisuel theories of Russian cinamatographer S.M. Eisenstein in his film Alexandre Nevski (1938). Despite the fact that these experiences don't work, the author demonstrates how, with the movement of both structural elements of image and sound, the synchronisation of senses may be possible.

Following a developmental research project, this article presents the various stages that led to elaborating an analysis grid for children's music books that might be used in preschool education. These stages are 1) analysis and exploration, 2) design and construction, 3) evaluation and reflection, 4) implementation and spread. Iterations to arrive at the final grid are presented. Considering both musical and literary criteria, the grid may be helpful to researchers wishing to describe books for preschool classroom libraries in a detailed way and to preschool teachers seeking support in their selection of books for musicking with children.
