AbstractInterdisciplinarity may be conceived as arising from the necessities of concrete interventions, as the essence of an encompassing metatheory, as the product of the complexity of objects, even as the effect of a transversal methodology. This article presents a study pertaining to this last approach to inter. We have in fact studied the form taken by one of the founding constituents of scientific activity, literature reviews, in social work and nursing. The study of the homology of forms between two phenomenons, allows to think the complex object that represents interdisciplinarity, and at once to reflect upon disciplinarity in social work.

A non-standard epistemology, relatively autonomous of the disciplines and of the present, is necessary to characterize a new logic of interdisciplinarity. This will show how the crisis of representation in science, contemporary changes in scientific object, heterogeneity and incompatibility of models (another narrative of the future in the sciences), leads us to practice an “interdiscipline” that cannot be characterized as a combination of different disciplinary knowledges. We will show how, within this heterogeneity, building “sites of interdiscipline” allows for new relations between the disciplines, including democratic relations between disciplines. This implies a translation or derivation from disciplines, and a concept of objects as “unknowns” and not represented at a “phenomenological distance”.

This article situates the emergence of the concept of the interdisciplinary in a historic context. While the search for the unit of knowledge has always been with us, such a unit must be viewed as a quest of the human mind rather than a pre-existing fact. Interdisciplinariness is a recent concept that arose with the development of scientific thought and took shape as scientific knowledge acquired disciplinary structures. If reflects both an effort to overcome compartmentalization and the movement towards diversification within the disciplines. lncreased recourse to the concept as of the middle of the twentieth century can be explained by factors of various natures: epistemological ones, of course; but those of a social, technological, ideological, and other nature as well.
