Prevalent approaches in the academic component of Translation Studies research can be divided into two main categories, one falling under the human science disciplines (HSA or Human Sciences Approaches), and the other based on canonical science (CSA or Canonical Scientific Approach). Methods used in the latter are often relatively complex and intrusive. Translation scholars without research training are sometimes drawn to the potential strengths of advanced methods and new technology. However, the use of these methods may prove to be counterproductive when they add little value for the high cost of resources, and when they jeopardize the ecological validity of the study.

AbstractFor an Historiography of Translation Theories: Questions of Method — The historiography of translation and of translation theories is an underdeveloped branch of translation studies, both in view of the latter's claim for interdisciplinarity particularly exemplified by the history of the discipline, and the growing appeal for an in-depth understanding, in historical terms, of the intricate relations between modern theories, esp. taking into account their origins and development. The article deals with several methodological problems of the historical research of translation theories. First, the necessity is stressed to take exhaustive corpora as a basis for the analysis, implying the consideration of traditionally neglected sources, and of correlated disciplines. Secondly, a plea is made for a carefully pondered interaction between contemporary and historical concepts, by understanding the former's role as complementary and not substitutive. The relations between content and context can be described according to the same principle. Thirdly, an analysis is made of some problems involved with the analysis of the evolutionary nature of theories, and their constitution into "paradigms." Finally, the progress-model prevalent in contemporary translation theories is criticized and opposed to a view on evaluation determined by proper historical factors, among which the contextual one receives special emphasis.

A dancer always brings into play his / her personal history (experience, emotions and feelings) when performing. But this history, as meaningful as it is secret, rarely takes the shape of a narrative spoken aloud by the dancer in juxtaposition with dancing. The author focuses on the development of two autobiographical roles drawn from her own practice to examine the particular characteristics of a performance composed of simultaneous narration and dance. The dancer's body-voice-text becomes an interdisciplinary matrix of tensions, restarts, distancing and crossovers which, in the end, relies on the dancer's expertise and nurtures her sensitive and expressive potential.

The Colombier farmstead in Varennes-sur-Seine was created ex nihilo in 1506, in a wetland of the Seine river valley. To this day, it constitutes a unique illustration of an interdisciplinary approach to the archeology of a landscape of the recent past. Archaeological, paleoenvironmental, historical and archaeo-geographical data contribute to a broader understanding of this marsh and wet meadow landscape, handed down and enhanced over the course of two centuries. Though recognized as a complete environment in itself, it has also been analyzed in terms of its role as an area of human activity. This approach has contributed to an improved social interpretation of the archaeology of the site, with the demonstration that, in the early XVIth century, its role was far from that of being an area to which people were simply relegated. Artefacts, ecofacts and geofacts show that this wetland environment was experienced and perceived as a key source of social distinction by a small rural elite in pursuit of social empowerment, at the cusp of the transition between the medieval and modern worlds.

In the last five years, the library of Lanaudière's Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux embarked on systematizing and offering its services online in order to meet the new needs of the organization. The information monitoring services offered was reviewed in its entirety in order to reflect the new realities. From specialized alerts, information monitoring has become thematic. The processes, almost entirely performed manually, have been revamped and automated to alleviate the time and resources constraints. Kentika Press has been the chosen tool to log the RSS feeds and to create monitoring newsletters. More users can now benefit from the information monitoring alerts and the primary evaluations of the project are positive.

This article offers a transversal crossing of a my PHD-thesis, devoted to the Encyclopaedic Temptation in Francophone Africa. Embracing an extensive chronology (from the 1920s to the present day), this paper constructs seven hypotheses about the polymath's marginalized figure and the encyclopaedic practices he is led to develop in various scientific, artistic or literary contexts. Attempting to demonstrate that encyclopedism, which has been identified as a dominant feature of contemporary French fiction, also thrives in Africa, this article calls for a decompartmentalization of the French-speaking literary field.

While placing oral cultures at the heart of a historical reflection open to cross-disciplinarity, this is a study of the dynamics of exchange and the significance of song in French colonial society. It facilitates a reappraisal of issues related to the differentiation of cultural models as they spread from Europe to America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Singing practices offer an ideal perspective for understanding identity constructions in heterogeneous and constantly changing societies. An examination of phenomena dealing with long-term transmission and renewal allows us to question the mechanisms of persistence related to a French-speaking oral heritage with lasting roots in an orally based memory that is widely shared between France and America.

On the basis of their experience as observers and researchers in the social sciences, the authors offer an "inside perspective" concerning the crisis which has shaken the foundations of contemporary social science. This crisis of knowledge clearly reveals the fatigue of a certain rational order as evidenced on the one hand by the failure of ambitious theoretical constructs to deal adequately with the complexity of reality and on the other, by the end of the hegemony exercised by quantitative approaches. At the same time, we are rediscovering the usefulness of more qualitative approaches and experimenting with new means of "knowing" which occur on the level of our emotions and imagination. Social existence, multiple levels of meaning and interdisciplinarity have come into a new focus. The status of the researcher is increasingly questioned and the value of his diplomas has dropped as we enter the realms of incertainty brought about by the knowledge crisis. A new space is being created for "conversion" which generates a critique of science and praxis together with new paths for exploration and experience and ultimately a new perspective on social phenomena.
