AbstractThis paper argues that there are still clues in the ideas of Ralph Cudworth that enable us to develop a philosophical concept of God capable of addressing many of the perplexities of our own time. The association of love with the ultimately real emerges in Cudworth as a viable philosophical idea. It is argued further that the only successful idealist philosophy of religion is one which makes goodness paramount, and that only its concrete manifestation as love can make the notion of God intelligible, as can be seen today in the works of Jean-Luc Marion.

This article explores the cognitive information carried by cultural referents and presents a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how target audiences grasp them. I depart from the assumption that cultural referents are used in works of fiction – the examples presented here are taken from a TV sitcom – to allow the target audience to associate characters with a given sociocultural environment. Depending on the techniques used in the translation the individuals will need to make a greater effort than the target audience of the original text and some information will not be appropriately retrieved. It can help the translator to identify the critical phases in this cognitive process.

AbstractMontreal's interethnic dynamic does not correspond to any known occidental model. In the city's postmodern cultural maelstrom, plural identity referents are the norm. Located in the heart of the city, the Mile-End neighbourhood synthetizes and symbolizes better than any other the city's plural and hybrid social reality. In this article, the concept of hybridity as defined by Sherry Simon is presented as a hybrid marker, even though it as been considered pejorative in the past. Based on observations of everyday life, I propose a reflexion on the meaning and scope of the concept of cultural hybridity in the Mile-End neighbourhood. I see this aspect of Mile-End as the crystallization of an emerging « montréalité ».
