ABSTRACT Some metres in front of the "Ciste des Cous", around chambered tomb in a circular cairn, the megalithic tomb of "les Pierres-Folles" is of the "angevin" type. Its chamber is 5 m long and 2.60 m wide. Its narrow tumulus has a rectilinear façade and looks like the "angevin dolmen" of la Bajoulière in Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne (Maine-et-Loire). The archaeological elements found in this very disturbed megalith do not allow us to date the construction.

The present contribution is above all a reasoned inventory of testimonies of megalithic art in Aquitaine. Engraved decorations can still be observed on the Guillay menhir at Larrivière in the Landes département and on the end stones of the Curton gallery grave at Jugazan and the Roquefort gallery grave at Lugasson, both in the Gironde département. Pictorial motifs that have now disappeared could have decorated the Barbehère gallery grave at Saint-Germain-d’Esteuil (Gironde) and much more hypothetically the Lumé 1 gallery grave at Fargues-sur-Ourbise (Lot-et-Garonne). The representations are in very great majority abstract. Only one figurative engraving is known (bovine on the Guillay menhir). It is in addition completely plausible that other shallow engravings as well as pictorial decorations carried out on limestone slabs were destroyed by precipitations, wind or frost. At all events, the scarcity of decorated monuments does not make it possible to apprehend the significance of this parietal megalithic art and it is for the time being impossible to exceed the elementary stage of a description of the decorations and the motifs inventoried.
