This article presents the results of a year spent studying the pilgrimage to Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer in Camargue, Provence, based on the diocesan archives of Aix-en-Provence. The pilgrimage, held each year on may 25th and 26th, brings together the Roma who share the cult of Saint Sara, who is referred to as Sara la noire, the legendary servant girl of Saintes-Maries. The goal of the archival research was to retrace the enigmatic origins of “Saint” Sara, whose cult Church authorities have not always seen in a favourable light. During the fieldwork that followed, the author found traces of an identity that was completely unsuspected until then.
