Around 1521, when Anne de Graville published her adaptation of Boccacio’s Teseida—which had already been translated into French in the second half of the fifteenth century—she was already known for her rendering of Alain Chartier’s Belle dame sans merci into rondeaux. Although the poetical transformation at work in this earlier piece may at first appear as an end in itself, a closer analysis of the process of poetical “translation” reveals another dimension of the text: that is, Graville’s exploration of new modes of male and female discourse. Apparently designed as a word-for-word rendition of Chartier’s dialogue, Graville’s rondeaux are marked by subtle shifts of textual perspective aimed at reinforcing the lady’s rhetorical stance. Goaded by the “translation pretext” at work in the rondeaux, I wish here to explore the rhetorical strategies deployed by Graville in the Beau Romant des deux amants, where, though posing as a humble commissioned writer, she deftly manipulates the topoi of a still dominantly masculine genre. While from the 1530s onwards the genre was to benefit from female contributions, gradually accustoming readers to the “feminization” of sentimental narratives, it still remains to be established whether the need for a feminized rendering of the genre’s discursive modes was articulated in a similar guise in the previous decade.

The author describes the magnitude of the tsunamis that devastated parts of many South-East Asian countries by December 26, 2004, mainly Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, killing 300,000 people, the most important human race disaster of all times. The enormity of the human tragedy is difficult to comprehend and the thoughts are firstly with the victims of that huge catastrophe. He also looks at the global and generous contributions and donations from world governments, private enterprises and humanitarian groups to support recovery and humanitarian efforts in the wake of such a tremendous tragedy, including UN contributions and multiple aid efforts and medical assistance. As the world continued to examine the economic cost of relief and rehabilitation for the deadly Indian Ocean tsunamis, insurance industry estimates put total insured losses between $5 billion and $10 billion. Insured losses were expected to be small as the percentage of the overall economic losses because of the limited amount of property insurance coverage purchased in the affected countries. Finally, he examines lessons learned from the impact and management of future tsunami catastrophes, initiated by UN in partnership with govemments, which have key roles to play in disaster prevention, financial support and recovery.

The cell phone when used at the wheel may be a distraction that could be harmful toroad safety. A research project on 12 691 drivers users and 23 387 drivers non-usershas shown that the users, men as well as women, have relative risks for collisionsand for injury collisions that are 38 % higher that for non-users (Laberge-Nadeauet al., 2003).Two questions arise : (i) Are the two cohorts comparable in terms of collision ratesbefore using the cell phone? (ii) How to respond to the argument that cell phonespose no risks since their use is increasing but collision rates diminish?Among the 36 078 respondents of 1999 there were 18 707 with a driver's permit in1987 : 5 107 men became users, 7 779 remained non-users, 1 365 and 4 438 respectivelyfor the women. Collision rates in 1987 for the two groups are not significantlydifferent, neither for all collisions, nor for injury collisions. Between 1987 and 1999the collision rates for non users declined significantly more than for the ones whobecame users; this result holds for men and for women. In conclusion : (i) On the basis of the collisions in 1987, one can assert that thecohort of male users and the one of female users are comparable, although slightlyless safe for the younger users (16-34 years old), to the cohort of male non-users andof female non-users respectively before the use of a cell phone. (ii) The collisionrates diminish differently for the two cohorts; they decrease more for the non-usersthan for the users, both for men and women.

This article explores the tendency to utopian impulse in Léonora Miano's recent novels. Reading the two volumes of Crépuscule du tourment (2016-2017), La Saison de l'ombre (2013) and Rouge Impératrice (2019), the article shows that in each case fictional constructions which can be seen as heterotopias (Foucault) complicate social representations in the novels. Although masculine and feminine are two separate principles in Miano's thought, this complexity opens possibilities for some gender fluidity.

An analysis of the films adapted from the novels of Irène Némirovsky, using Francis Vanoye's approach, may illuminate the confrontation of these two mediums, that of cinema and that of literature, in adaptation. David Golder (1929), followed by Le bal (1930), brought great success to Némirovsky and these two novels were brilliantly adapted to the screen during the transition to "talking cinema" in 1931. If Julien Duvivier (David Golder, 1931) and Wilhelm Thiele (Le bal,1931) were motivated by the search for stories evoking modernity, the adaptation of the posthumous novel Suite française, directed by Saul Dibb in 2014, is also driven by the desire to pay homage to Némirovsky. How do these three directors, representing different moments in the history of cinema, illustrate the issues of adaptation addressed by Vanoye? This essay examines what motivates and limits these films with particular attention focused on the usage of music, while observing how adaptation, through the process of migration from one medium to another, leads to the appropriation of the original work.

In this anniversary issue, it seemed a good occasion to acquaint readers with the publication's deep roots and to shed light on a few facets of its future. Under the title Assurances: its past and future, the attempt is made to analyse the evolution of the journal Assurances through four pivotal periods:• The monthly Journal published by Gérard Parizeau (1932 to 1935)• The Review under the direction of Gérard Parizeau (1935 to 1988)• The Review under the direction of Rémi Moreau (1988 to 1996)• The Review under the auspices of HEC and the direction of Georges Dionne (1996 to date). The history of Assurances merges with the major developments in the insurance industry in Canada. It coincides with the reforms (legislative, technical, legal, economic, and professional) shaping the evolution of insurance and the spread of its use both in Canada and Quebec.Founded in 1932, the journal Assurances is now an integral part of HEC's large international projects, especially with regard to research and teaching in the field of risk management and insurance. HEC Montreal major challenge is to take this review to new heights. To do so, it should rely on research while seizing every opportunity to make theoretical and practical links with business decision-makers.

In the twentieth century, at two crucial instances, comparisons with ancient Greek traditions played an important role in forwarding the argument in favor of the early origins of the pentateuchal narrative: Martin Noth’s “amphictyonic hypothesis” and Frank Moore Cross’s account of the Israelite “epic.” This article argues that success of these arguments owes to a hidden “parallelomania” at work in the mid-century, which successfully made the evidence of ancient Greek phenomena seem like something that it was not in service to desirable arguments. Finally, it explores how contemporary approaches can avoid repeating past mistakes.
