This article examines the ideology of the Orient in the work of Marie José Thériault, whose practice of Orientalism runs through her practice as a writer of fiction. This is particularly apparent in her only novel, Les demoiselles de Numidie. We will see how Thériault makes the Arab Orient into an elsewhere of dream and fantasy in order to achieve a certain feminization of culture and the world. Given that the pattern on which identity is modelled is generally the Orient of the Arabian Nights, we may ask to what extent the encounter with this Eastern otherness provides a dialogic or monologic resolution to the issue of love relationships that is the focus of Thériault's work, and that actually constitutes an extended metaphor for the East-West relationship.
