In this study of regional immigrant settlement, the author focuses on the integration of agricultural entrepreneurs of European origin in four regions of Québec. She examines the material aspects of their integration, from the point of view of both their social and professional establishment and their involvement in the different organizations of rural society. Besides situating the analysis of immigration in a non-urban context, a question that has received scant attention to date, this approximately 15-page study puts forward the view that integration is a diachronic process. It highlights the variety and multiciplicity of strategies associated, inter alia, with the formal and informal networks preferred most by the respondents. These strategies are closely linked to a blueprint for economic development and a determination to participate fully in the life of the local community.

In a peripheral perspective, globalization seems to be, in its economic structures, its political institutions and its cultural narratives, a deep dynamism which attempts to destroy the destiny of the individuals and the history of their collectivities. But in this is a paradox. This attempt doesn't result in a total freezing individuals nor institutions. It is a site for rethinking globalization, and for the peripheral renaissance and the emergence of a spirituality which informs and supports the new spiritual families. These families have become the privileged agents of a different globalization, the other globalization, the human globalization.

AbstractOur observations provide clear evidence that there are two models of Quebec's spatio-economic structure. The first model, based on the centrality principle, is very well illustrated by the St. Lawrence Valley urban system; the second is in perfect conformity to the accessibility principle, essential in this vast periphery. This spatioeconomic structure is also characterized by an interlocking network of management territories, designed to ensure the effective exercise of public responsibilities related to the territorial organization of goods, services and programs. Management territories mainly comprise traditional municipalities, administrative regions, RCMs (regional county municipalities) and now, designated economic zones. Apart from these two models, which serve as a reference framework for analytical purposes, Quebec's contemporary spatioeconomic dynamic is causing new territorial forms to emerge by means of structured and interlocking spatial patterns. In fact, our prediction is that there is a gradual quadruple division of the economy directed toward the following activities: natural resources extraction, goods and services consumption, manufacturing, as well as innovation. According to our reading of the current situation, as described in this article, the question of developing a general model of global coherence comes to the fore. Our spatioeconomic analysis provides a few answers in this respect.
