On July 26, 2017, the ethnomusicologist Flavia Gervasi met with José Evangelista to discuss the influence of world music on his work as a composer, professor, and promoter. Evangelista is known not only for his involvement in contemporary classical music, but also for his work in promoting non-Western music in Montreal, both as a teacher and as a cultural emissary. The goal of the meeting was to answer the following question: How does a composer who was trained in the Western musical tradition approach non-Western music, which is normally the object of epistemological reflection for ethnomusicologists and anthropologists of music?

Identity is defined here as the result of a "dialectical movement of internalization of and resistance to the interactive situation which defines the relative place of oneself and the other". Immigration creates a rapid change in reference points and gives immigrants a new and usually derogatory sense of identity, wherein they no longer recognize themselves. At that point, immigrants develop various identity strategies, running from acceptance to collective resistance to social relationships imposed upon them by this diminished definition of themselves.

Research Framework: Immigration in contexts such as Canada and Quebec is likely to generate changes in masculine functions. Thus, immigrant fathers, depending on their origins and profiles, negotiate and present different facets of masculinity to adapt to the various realities of the host country. Objectives: This article examines the impact of immigration on the masculinity and paternal identity of immigrant fathers of different origins in Quebec. Methodology: We conducted a total of 39 interviews with immigrant fathers of sub-Saharan, North African, European, Asian and Latin American origin. An interview guide with open-ended questions enabled them to express themselves on their perception of fatherhood, their identity, their paternal engagement and their adaptation in a migratory context. Results: Our findings indicate that fatherhood is an opportunity for these men to validate their masculinity. Furthermore, the role of provider represents an expression, valorization, and reinforcement of their masculinity. We also found that immigrant fathers’ perceptions of masculinity evolved and were redefined through paternal involvement, in order to overcome the difficulties of integration in the host country. Conclusion: This article shows that, beyond the difficulties, immigration represents an opportunity for commitment and redefinition of fatherhood and masculinity for many immigrant men. Contribution: The various observations arising from this study show the need to take masculinity into account in the care and development of programs for immigrant fathers. Finally, the article offers research possibilities to help understand better different types of fatherhood.

ABSTRACTThis paper is a critical survey of the currency crisis literature. Theoretical and empirical analysis generally fail to anticipate currency crisis because of the complex nature of such crisis and because of the prevailing role of speculators. The main weakness of this research is its incapacity to integrate properly the market maker's behaviours, although determining the crisis launching.

Hegemony, on a global or regional scale, is a recurring theme in international relations and in Gramscian-inspired and neo-Gramscian theory. In addition to economic and military power, these approaches take into account the existence of a model of global governance, which is guided by standards that promote universality and world order, and their norms and institutions, which are derived from the European experience from the establishment of State control and colonization to the hegemonic experiences of Britain and the United States. Neo-Gramscian perspectives provide not only important insight into the model of Western hegemony, but also a critical reference point for understanding said views. This article extends these approaches to non-Western hegemonic models of so-called “post-Western” theories, which, despite a rapidly changing international system that favors emerging actors, especially China, are rare in contemporary analysis. Whether it be the rise of the global (transpacific) ruling class or the counter-hegemonic model, this is a valid area of neo-Gramscian research. Moreover, post-Western universal discourses, particularly those of the Chinese, could be regarded as a hegemonic, in the Gramscian sense, episteme of domination. Finally, drawing from the concept of hegemony, the similarity between Gramscian and non-Western perspectives—and the critiques of subliminal Eurocentrism or “soft” Orientalism—is examined to understand the issues surrounding the emergence of competing theoretical approaches in the grand narrative of the Atlantic world that prevails in international relations.

AbstractGlobalization promotes the development of translation schools, but it is accompanied by an alarming phenomenon: major languages will be increasinlgy encouraged to the detriment of languages of lesser importance and the cultures they convey. In order to slow down the process, ÉSIT teaches speakers of minor languages to translate into a better known language and thus make their culture known to the rest of the world. The teachers do not need to be familiar with the students' mother tongue. This article uses practical examples to illustrate the strategies that make this approach possible. It is a convincing illustration of the principles behind the “theory of meaning” (Théorie Interprétative de la Traduction) on which it is based.

Europeans, almost immediately upon arrival, perceived America as an obstacle to be crossed. Their first grand illusion of the American North (Canada) was to underestimate the vastness of its continental dimension. For more than a century, Sébastien Cabot, Henry Hudson, Thomas James and others, seeking a passage to Asia, imagined the South Sea (Pacific Ocean) to be much closer to the North Sea (Atlantic) than it was in reality. For Champlain, in particular, this quest lay at the center of his mission to America. The idea of temporary settlement while awaiting a better place to go became a founding myth of Canada (Québec). From the very beginning, European explorers saw Canada as a mere place of transit to somewhere else.
