Between 1926 and 1979, limited studies on the Sarlat abbey have never been replaced in a general set of problems. Confronted by the absence of documents on the Romanesque building phase of the former abbey-church of Sarlat that was raised to a cathedral in the XIVth century, it became necessary to establish a connection between all the Romanesque remains of the abbey and especially the bell tower-porch and the adjacent Romanesque room discovered while the organ was being restored. It was indispensable to insert it in the monastic establishment of which the Lantern of the Dead, the chapel house and an ornamented fragment from the Saint-John baptismal chapel still survive. These Romanesque elements inscribed in a general set of problems allowed apprehending the construction period, the second half of the XIIth century, period when the abbey was at its height, and questioning about the liturgical function of these sacred spaces. Following analysis, it was observed they seem to correspond to a desire of asserting the antiquity of the abbey and its independence.
