The conditions leading to the supremacy of a Frankish king, Clovis, at the end of the 5th century, and the stages of the takeover of Gaul by the Merovingians remain for a very large part still uncertain : conquest by a nation, rush of the Franks, or collection of political and administrative wrecks by a king and his faithful, supported by his descendants ? For a long time, the same texts have been used and interpreted at will, testimonies provided by funerary archeology called for help struggle with the same limits being themselves subject to biases or a priori, both about comment and dating. Valid cross-referencing is an illusion ; however some correlations make sense. Risks remain high because of the thin line between reality and fantasy, the approach itself looking like freestyle skiing ; this is why we can only express feelings about the northwestern regions of Gaul, chosen as examples, and submit its results to deeper though and criticism.
