There is important evidence that Small Knowledge Intensive Firms (SKIFs) have demonstrated some unique characteristics in their internationalisation process. The process takes place earlier in the life of the firm and develops due to the role played by partnerships. The paper analyzes three different SKIFs through a cross case study method. We build on different process based models that have studied the internationalisation process of international ventures. The findings show that the SKIFs internationalisation consists of a series of phases characterised by triggering factors. The paper sheds new light into which type of partnerships mostly matter in the growth of SKIFs.

In this paper we propose a more comprehensive understanding of the (recent) contrasted assessment of French competitiveness clusters, by exhibiting the protean nature of both clusters' structures and clusters' performances. Applying data analysis techniques to clusters' scoreboard data, we build an original typology of French clusters. We conclude that clusters' morphology may explain their performance, thus calling for a more differentiated governance of those meta-organisations.

This article explores the role of industrial clusters in France, which can be regarded as formal clusters, in the internationalization of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Based on a multiple case study, we shed light on the ways in which clusters facilitate the international development of SMEs. Furthermore, we identify the perceived advantages of internationalization through clusters and the characteristics of SMEs which tend to benefit the most from this internationalization mode.

The aim of this article is to better understand how the innovation ecosystem of Aalto University, in Helsinki, Finland, was structured in the early 2000s. Relying on an analysis of secondary data as well as on the principles of a structural analysis of the network, we located the actors and their connections over the emergence period of this ecosystem. The results show the coexistence of two spaces organized as socio-cognitive networks able to interact and reinforce each other. A territorialized space, focused on an innovation dynamic built on the convergence strategy of the three university rectors involved at Aalto; and a deterritorialized space built by a community of actors focused on the affirmation of proposals and ideas to implement new innovation governance practices.
