The case for systematic attention by labour historians to the crew list collection held in the Maritime History Archive of the Memorial University of Newfoundland is argued in terms of the historical interest of British maritime labour in the 19th and 20th centuries, and of the richness of the material itself. Maritime labour was characterised by a series of hiring practices and business dynamics which make it particularly worthy of attention. The impact of steam and steel technology, increased capitalization and government attention, and the emergence of a collective identity within the workforce, combine to produce a unique but important labour phenomenon which the existence of almost complete demographic and employment data bring well within the grasp of the historian. Various methodologies for studying the material are discussed, and the preferred method of studying the workforce of one large firm over a short period of time is illustrated with a brief case study.

The labour and socialist movement of British Columbia before World War One was home to a number of competing tendencies and factions. While the different groups could and did work together on occasion, their relations with each other were often marked by hostility and suspicion. The Vancouver free speech fights of 1909 and 19)2 illustrate dramatically the in-fighting between the Socialist Party of Canada, the Industrial Workers of the World, and the Vancouver Trades and Labor Council. The different approaches of the organizations to the issue of free speech reflect their different ideologies, constituencies, and class strata, and the actions of the SPC suggest that the party was, despite its impossiblist rhetoric, more interested in pragmatic trade unionism and social democracy than revolution. In refusing to put its faith in parliamentary democracy, the IWW demonstrated that it had a more consistent and deeper analysis of capitalist society than most historians have suggested, but this very analysis and the actions consistent with it meant the IWW could be increasingly marginalized and isolated.

In early 1919 A new union was created in British Columbia, an organization that brought together provincial loggers for the first time. Despite much initial success, the Lumber Workers Industrial Union was moribund by 1922, and it soon disappeared completely from provincial logging camps. As well as examining the grievances of the loggers, the changing nature of the logging industry, and the actions of employers, this history of the LWIU also offers insights into the character of the Canadian working class in the post-War years by highlighting the struggles of the Socialist Party of Canada, the One Big Union, and the Industrial Workers of the World to dominate the LWIU. Furthermore, this article draws out and assesses the divergent programmes of the LWIU leaders, who were aligned with the Socialist Party of Canada, and the men in the camps, exposing a fundamental gap in the post-War socialist agenda.

Manitoba agrarianism underwent a change during the settlement and post-settlement period as a nineteenth century oppositional vision was displaced by an accommodationist position in the twentieth century. This article delineates this change by reconstructing the language of radicalism employed by the Patrons of Industry and the language of accommodation that became pre-eminent in the Manitoba Grain Grower"s Association and the United Farmers of Manitoba. It is suggested that, by viewing these languages as distinct entities with their own discursive unity, it is possible and necessary to view agrarian ideology at some distance from its putative class location.

Who is an organized worker today in Québec? After a review of the main changes in the labour market since 1975 in three main areas: feminization, precarisation and tertiarisation, this article portrays the internal characteristics of the organized population.

The authors then go on to compare organized and unorganized workers with the potential labour force regarding their age, sex, education, work status and average wage. They conclude that the organized population is relatively older, that men are over-represented, that it enjoys better job security, relatively high wages, and sectorial concentration. Finally, the article attempts to throw some light on the impact of new demographic parameters on the difficult strategic repositioning being crystaliscd in the Québec labour movement.

This paper uses two recent books in Canadian labour history, Craig Heron's Working in Steel and Ian Radforth's Bushworkers and Bosses, to briefly review the place of masculinity in working-class history. The author suggests that while Heron and Radforlh introduce masculinity into their studies, they do not fully develop all of its meanings and functions. Drawing upon the literature on the social construction of work, gender, and sexuality, the paper then goes on to suggest some ways in which we can begin to explore aspects of masculinity and sexuality within working-class history.

The 1891 census asked Canadians if they had been unemployed in the week preceding the taking of the census. On the basis of a preliminary analysis of responses from working class areas in British Columbia, we comment on the nature of this source, and on the possibility of using it to determine both the extent of unemployment and the characteristics of the unemployed. We demonstrate our conclusion that this source has significant utility by testing the hypothesis that unemployment was a structural problem in the industrial capitalist labour market and not simply a result of specific deficiencies in part of the labour force.
