This article examines the life and playwriting of Sister Mary Agnes who wrote a large oeuvre of plays, largely for girls, while living and working in Winnipeg’s St. Mary’s Academy between 1909 and 1928. It examines her biography, religious order, and professional work in order to elucidate the bold political positions expressed in two of her plays, "A Patriot’s Daughter" and The Red Cross Helpers: A Patriotic Play. It endeavours to answer the question, what made it possible for a Catholic nun living in the heavily charged political environment of Winnipeg at the time of the First World War to express views that were contrary to that political environment and to do so in plays for young high school girls?

C’est durant cette période qu’elle a composé un grand nombre de pièces de théâtre destinées surtout aux filles. Cet article analyse sa vie, sa congrégation religieuse et son travail professionnel afin d’illustrer les positions politiques hardies exprimées dans deux de ses pièces : « A Patriot’s Daughter » et The Red Cross Helpers : A Patriotic Play. This article considers the influence of Theosophy in the theatre work and theory of director Roy Mitchell (1884-1944). Mitchell’s apparently prescient theories concerning mise en scène, motion in acting and the communal role of the audience in the experience of theatre in his popular book Creative Theatre (1929) has led scholars such as Mavor Moore and Renate Usmiani to compare Mitchell’s work with that of Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Peter Brook, and Jerzy Grotowski. What has been neglected, however, is Mitchell’s conviction that theatre is a "medium of revelation" that allows for the universal and, most importantly, the "creative," vital spirit or soul to manifest itself in the material world and to foster the "great end" he called the paradosis; this he defined as a "recreating instant" in which the senses are filled with "form and sound," the emotions stirred "to sympathy," and ideas shaped "to one intense accord." This event makes for the witness "a causeway into an inner world where they rested in a lightning flash of communion." In this way Mitchell envisioned the re-creation of an idealized,"ancient" form of performance, by way of the confluence of theosophical and theatrical practice, in an effort to "proclaim the immortality of the souls of all created things, to restate the law of the cyclic return of souls and of the effects of the deeds of souls, to enunciate the doctrine that all religions, philosophy and science at their highest emanated from a body of custodians of the wisdom of the race."

In 1967 George Ryga wrote The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, ironically celebrating Canada’s centennial with the first Canadian play to portray the tragedy of our aboriginal peoples; it subsequently became a canonical staple of Canadian theatre. Depicting the martyrdom of a Native girl on the streets of Vancouver, it was a powerful consciousness-raising experience for its white, middle-class audiences. Nevertheless, the play simplistically sentimentalised the aboriginal plight as the victimisation of passive children by irresponsible white parents: a Eurocentric, patriarchal paradigm that reflected the Department of Indian Affairs’ assimilation-ist policies.

Almost twenty years later, Tomson Highway’s The Rez Sisters dramatised the paradigm of Native writers telling their own stories. A comedic revisioning of Native tragedy, it portrays seven Manitoulin Island "rez sisters" who raise money to attend THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD; it foregrounds matriarchal empowerment and valorises Native spirituality through the omnipresence of Nanabush, the Ojibway Trickster. Although both plays end with a death, the hopeless inadequacy of the priest’s requiem for Rita Joe, "Hail Mary, Mother of God … pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death," has been replaced by Nanabush’s final dance, "merrily and triumphantly" celebrating a vibrant Native culture.

En 1967, George Ryga a écrit The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, la première pièce de théâtre canadienne traitant des difficultés des peuples autochtones au Canada. De façon ironique, elle a été composée l’année même du centième anniversaire du pays. Par la suite, la pièce est devenue un incontournable du théâtre canadien. Illustrant le martyre d’une jeune fille autochtone dans les rues de Vancouver, la pièce avait ému l'auditoire et engendré une prise de conscience de la part des spectateurs blancs provenant de la classe moyenne. Toutefois, de façon simpliste, elle a empreint de sentimentalisme la misère des autochtones en la représentant sous la forme de représailles exercées contres des enfants passifs par leurs parents blancs et irresponsables. Il s’agissait donc d’un paradigme patriarcal et eurocentriste qui reflétait les politiques d’assimilation du ministère des Affaires indiennes.

Environ vingt ans plus tard, le paradigme des écrivains autoch-tones racontant leurs propres histoires a été mis en scène dans The Rez Sisters par Tomson Highway. Cette interprétation humoristique de la tragédie autochtone présente sept « femmes de la réserve » de l’Île Manitoulin qui veulent amasser les fonds nécessaires pour participer au PLUS GRAND BINGO DU MONDE. La pièce met ainsi l’accent sur les pouvoirs matriarcaux et valorise la spiritualité autochtone via l’omniprésence du joueur de tour ojibway, Nanabush. Les deux pièces se terminent avec une mort, mais le requiem inadéquat et sans-espoir que prononce le prêtre pour Rita Joe, « Sainte Marie, mère de dieu … priez pour nous pauvres pécheurs, maintenant et à l’heure de notre mort, » a été remplacé par Nanabush qui danse «joyeusement et triomphalement, » célébrant ainsi la culture vibrante des autochtones.

Gary Taylor, a noted Shakespearean scholar, defines "theological architecture" as theatre space that is built with a religious hierarchical understanding. This paper considers the use of theological architecture to define the physical space of gods and humans in Michael Levine’s set designs for the Canadian Opera Company’s Die Walküre and Siegfried on Toronto’s Hummingbird stage. In particular this paper examines Levine’s use of theatrical space to create both vertical and horizontal cosmologies, the former embedded within the western stage itself and the latter embedded within the Norse religion that informs the Ring Cycle. The effect produces an alternating form of perception for the audience-viewers, the first psychological and the second a form of viewing known as"religious seeing."

This essay examines the relevance of the tragic account of evil for Canadian theatre in the shadow of the contemporary "war on terror." It concentrates on two important aspects of the ancient Greek depiction of evil in tragedy: (1) that no agent, human or divine, is either absolutely good or absolutely evil; and (2) that evil, understood as the experience of dread, cannot be exterminated but can, at best, be kept within limits. In other words, the tragic account of evil is neither"melodramatic" nor"eschatological." The essay then discusses three recent Canadian plays that address current moral and geo-political issues: The Adventures of Ali & Ali and the aXes of Evil by Marcus Youssef, Guillermo Verdecchia, and Camyar Chai; Capture Me by Judith Thompson; and Insomnia by Daniel Brooks with Guillermo Verdecchia. Through these works, this essay explores how the experience of evil is currently being depicted and considers the possibilities for a new type of tragic theatre in Canada.
