Histoire et anthropologie sensorielle

Est-il possible de discerner rétrospectivement le mode de présence au monde des hommes du passé par l'analyse de la hiérarchie des sens et de la balance établie entre eux à un moment de l'histoire et au sein d'une société donnée ? Telle est la question que se pose l'auteur. Celui-ci analyse tout d'abord les difficultés auxquelles se heurte l'historien désireux de répondre à cette interrogation. Gêné par la fugacité de la trace, celui-ci doit en outre tenir compte de l'historicité des modalités de l'attention, de celle des systèmes de perceptions et d'appréciation, ainsi que de la configuration mouvante du tolérable et de l'intolérable. Il lui faut enfin se méfier du tableau de l'Autre décrété par les observateurs. L'organisation du régime sensoriel constitue en effet l'un des éléments majeurs du dessin de l'imaginaire social.

Abstract

Sensorial Anthropology and History

Is it possible to discern retrospectively the mode of being in the world of previous generations through an analysis of the hierarchy of the senses, and the balance established among them, at a given moment in history in the context of a particular society ? Such is the question posed by the author. The latter begins by pointing out some of the difficulties which confront the historian wishing to respond to this question. Hampered by the fugacity of the trace, the latter must above ail take account of the historicity of the modalities of attention, as of the Systems of perception and judgment, as well as the ever changing configuration of the tolerable and the intolerable. Finally, it is important to be wary of the picture of the Other decreed by the observers. The organization of the sensory regime constitutes, in effect, one of the major elements in the design of the social imaginary.
