L’humanité comme projet

Résumé

Depuis toujours, la définition de l’humanité passe par la délimitation de la frontière entre « l’humain » et « l’inhumain » (ou encore l’« inapte à être humain », l’« indigne d’être compté parmi les humains », celui qui a « besoin d’être humanisé »). Les enjeux de pouvoir au coeur de la notion d’humanité, parfois masqués par la glose philosophique de l’humanisme, se constituent autour de cette frontière fréquemment modifiée par les impératifs politiques de chaque époque. Dans cet essai d’« herméneutique sociologique », l’auteur explore deux formes très contemporaines du débat sur cette frontière. D’une part, il réfléchit aux effets de pouvoir de la globalisation de l’économie de marché sur les formes d’humanité promues par notre époque. D’autre part, il traite des conséquences du multiculturalisme et de la reconnaissance du droit à la différence. Il termine en proposant une stratégie pour la reconstruction d’une humanité commune.

Abstract

The Project of Humanity

Defining humanity has always implied drawing a boundary dividing the « human » from the « inhuman » (or the « inept to be human », « undeserving to be counted as human » or « in need to be humanized »). Politics of humanity is the practice (underlying the philosophical gloss of humanism) of drawing, shifting and redrawing such a boundary according to the political agenda of each era. In this paper, defined by the author as an exercise in sociological hermeneutics, two contemporary related forms of that pratice are explored. The first part focuses on the contrarieties of globalization and their effects over the type of humanity which is privileged in our time. The second part deals with the consequences of multiculturalism and the right to recognition (of one’s difference). Lastly, the author speaks for a new strategy of humanity-building.
