Catégories ethniques et linguistiques au Québec : quand compter est une question de survie

Résumé

L’objectif du présent texte est de rapprocher trois champs de recherche généralement isolés les uns des autres : (1) l’histoire de l’immigration et de la diversité ethnique, (2) l’histoire du nationalisme québécois et (3) l’utilisation politique et idéologique des catégories ethniques et linguistiques pour définir qui est québécois ou québécoise. Dans le cas du Québec, l’utilisation politique des catégories ethniques ne peut se dissocier de l’histoire du nationalisme (ou des nationalismes) et de l’immigration. Pour comprendre cette histoire, le texte fait référence à la distinction entre le nationalisme ethnique, basé sur la notion culturelle de la nation, et le nationalisme civique, basé sur la notion de communauté politique, pour suggérer que les catégories ethniques et linguistiques y sont étroitement associées, mais de façon spécifique.

Abstract

Ethnic and linguistic categories in Quebec : when counting is a matter of survival

The aim of the article is to bring together three fields of research which are generally isolated from each other : (1) the history of immigration and ethnic diversity, (2) the history of Quebecois nationalism, and (3) the political and ideological use of ethnic and linguistic categories in defining who is Quebecois. In the case of Quebec, the political use of ethnic categories cannot be separated from the history of nationalism (or nationalisms) and of immigration. The article refers to the distinction between ethnic nationalism, based on the cultural idea of the nation, and civic nationalism, based on the notion of political community, in order to understand this history, and to suggest that ethnic and linguistic categories are closely associated with it, but in a specific manner.
