Ce livre met en évidence les discours concernant le choix qu’ont les publics de cinéma et de télévision, à travers une étude des appareils qui rendent possible l’émergence des pratiques de sélection, d’enregistrement, de visionnement asynchrone, d’archivage et de collection, et dès lors un plus grand contrôle et une personnalisation de l’expérience des spectateurs. Nous présenterons d’abord le panorama télévisuel nord-américain des années 1980-1990, qui marquent la fin d’une époque où la télévision était conçue comme un flux, étant liée à une logique de broadcasting. Nous décrirons ensuite l’arrivée de deux innovations technologiques, le magnétoscope et la télécommande, puis les lierons aux transformations culturelles et narratives de la télévision de fiction de l’époque. Cela nous amènera à présenter le cas de la série Northern Exposure (CBS, 1990-1995), un exemple de télévision « complexe ».

This book focuses on the discourses around the choice provided to cinema and television audiences by means of a study of the devices which made possible the emergence of practices of selection, recording, asynchronous viewing, archiving and collection, and through these greater control over and personalization of the viewing experience. We will first present an overview of North American television in the 1980s and 90s, which mark the end of an age when television was conceived as a flow, tied to a logic of broadcasting. We will then describe the arrival of two technological innovations, the videotape recorder and the remote control, linking those changes to the cultural and narrative transformations of the television series in that era. This will lead us to a presentation of the series Northern Exposure (CBS, 1990-95), an example of “complex” television.
